I'm looking for the easiest solution to playing DVD's through the 2010 nav screen, and was thinking that it might be possible to connect a portable DVD player through some RCA plugs somewhere in the back of the stock head unit. Has anyone done this? Any other suggestions?
I'm looking for a solution that allows the movies to play while the car is in motion.

I'm not super tech savvy, as you can probably tell....

Even if there was a way to hack it, the screen is only 256 colors. So the picture would be kinda blah.

If you have a portable DVD player, why not just play the movie on the DVD player's screen and run the audio output into the nav system's aux-in jack?

If your portable DVD player has bluetooth it will hook into the radio wirelessly, I did it last night with my iPhone, it was way cool  I have my iPhone hooked up to music thought the car via bluetooth and my son and I where thinking, if I had a Video on my phone it would go though my speakers and it does. We watched the video though my iPhone but the audio came though my car speakers.

I tried this with my 3GS w/Nav but the bluetooth introduced a significant delay in the sound (1-1.5 seconds) that put it out of sync with the video and made it unwatchable. Better to use a aux cable.

It think VAIS Technology is your best bet, but they don't have one yet. They told me to check back in a month, so check back I will.

Looks like the best solution so far, please let me know what you find out. So their MultiMediaLinQ wouldn't work for Prius 2010?

In the email he told me "We are making VML compatible with (the Prius)."
He also told me that he will notify me when it is ready, but I just keep checking.
This was on August 17, 2009

Man we kind of went off- topic with this...sorry.
Yes, It seems like the VML is audio only.
I emailed VAIS Tech and here is his reply:
    "Alan,
We do have plans for video integration for 2010 Prius, but it'll be done later on, spring of 2010.

As for standard iPod integration VML will be ready within this month.

    Thanks,

Sorry, but this should not be legal. I have a hard enough time dealing with people texting while driving, there should not be video screens within the view of the driver.

That's a great PSA. Drivers really seem to be getting worse and worse. I had a gorgeous motorcycle that I sold because I just didn't trust other drivers any more (I had so many patients who were hit while on motorcycles.) Almost every time I get on the road someone almost kills me, pulls on top of me, runs into me, or is up my rear while they are trying to speed. Almost every single time I look and it is someone on their cellphone. They are just oblivious to the road.

I don't see the point in needing a video screen to play video while on the road either. What's the point? Seems incredibly dangerous, just one more thing to distract a driver. What else are you they going to do? Show off to their friends while sitting in a parking lot? Grow up!

I agree with the previous (2) posts. We recently had to young girls die in car accidents as a result of "TEXT MESSAGING", and if you recall about a month ago the TOW TRUCK DRIVER & Attached Car smashed into another car and ended up in a homeowners back pool.

The police determined from the interview of the driver that he was not only Texting on 1 Phone (his personal phone) but also on the (Company Phone).

All these distractions today are going to cause more accidents and injury. I am just glad my Bluetooth phone connect to the Prius as well as it does and has exceptional clarity so I can keep my eyes on the road.

Drive careful if you get your DVD to play through the NAV.

In more and more states it's NOT LEGAL to have TV. DVD in front of the driver.
This just illustrates another great moment in the stupidity of mankind.

NO DRIVING WHILE WATCHING TV, DVD, ETC!!

Damn it's hard enough driving without wondering if the other knuckehead is paying attention to driving, or the titties on the MFD screen!!!

    Look everyone has their reasons.
If I decide to get the video unit it is for my wife so she can play videos for one kid while she waits in the car for the other 2 to finish school an hour later...
Please don't judge people before knowing all the facts.
Yes it is dangerous to watch videos while driving, but so is drinking coffee or eating while driving.
Hell, driving with not enough sleep is dangerous.

Can we please stop the flame wars?

The time your eyes are off the road watching a video compared to drinking or eating is a lot longer and far more dangerous. When observing those who text and drive, they found that they had their eyes off of the road for five seconds. As one journalist I recently saw on TV said "Would you drive with your eyes closed for 5 seconds?" And just because other people drink and eat while they drive, that is a lame excuse for someone to watch a video.

If the DVD is for your child in the back seat, I would think a portable DVD player would be the safer option.

Sorry if you think I am harsh, but distracted driving is a huge issue to me and a danger to us all.

Does this unit shut off when the car is in motion? I do not see anything stating that in the description.

And since you are a parent, with two small children in the backseat of a hatchback, how do you feel about the guy in the huge Expedition behind you watching his latest Netflix DVD on his GPS unit at a speed of 45mph?
