I consider this news but you might consider it just gossip.
I took my 2005 Prius package 1 in for an oil change today at Kearny Mesa Toyota. I have HOV stickers.
While I was waiting my salesman, Howard Sheehy came over to say hello and we got to talking about the market.
We talked about the waiting lists, the lack of Prii. He said they only had a pre-owned one on the lot. He pointed to the HOV stickers on a Prius waiting in the queue and said they were worth gold. He said he can sell a Prius for $2,000-$3,000 over going market prices with those stickers. He agreed with my $4,000 if it's in the L.A. area. So California Prius owners with HOV stickers. There you go.
I said even though my car had some cosmetic issues, I could probably get 75% of what I paid for it. He said I was wrong. He said even though I had a 2005 package 1 with 30,000 miles on it. I could probably get every penny I paid for it if I sold it today. Probably more because I have the HOV stickers. (Worth the $8.00 investment).
He said he just sold a 2007 for $35,000.
I couldn't believe that one.
He told me the 2009s were coming out soon but there wasn't that much difference. I told him I'd probably wait until the stickers ran out in 2011. He said he had just learned there was a time limit on them. I said I considered selling mine but there wasn't much point with the 2009 so similar and besides, my car will finally be paid off next April. I'm waiting until the stickers run out in 2011 or when they have a plug in.
He said the plug-ins might not be out in 2011 because they'll be testing them in fleets first. They'll want them to be thoroughly tested. I said they're already out now. He said yes, but not on a large scale.
We talked about EV. I said depending on the market I might wait if I can get an EV instead of a plug-in. I said whoever is first, but not GM. He seemed to think Toyota is going to be first to the market with an EV. The Prius is their groundwork.
Okay, this is all gossip. But Howard is a straight talker. Granted, he's just the internet sales manager and not privy to the closed door meetings at Toyota headquarters. I believe what he's telling me about the scarcity, waiting lists and selling prices because I've been reading it here.
I didn't figure the shortage would be as bad in So. Cal but I guess so.
I must say I was gratified to learn that with today's market, my Prius has held 100% of it's value. Awesome.
