Prius Prime 105mm Longer than Gen4 Prius

    Translated from Japanese car site WebCG..

    "Wheelbase is the same 2700mm as the "Prius". From such as the need to protect the lithium ion battery at the time of rear-end collision, the rear overhang is 80mm extension in Prius ratio."

    It's longer than the Prius v! (It's 165mm longer than Gen 4. 80mm is just the rear)

    Prius v: 4,630mm
    Prius Prime: 4,645mm

    Thanks for finding that information. I knew that the car was a few inches longer than the liftback, but I didn't know that it was because of added protection for the battery. It makes sense, though.

    Some nice images if you go to the original website and enlarge them, including a view out of the rear window.

    Here's a few of those photos. It looks to me like the interior dimensions may be similar to the Gen4 with exception of the raised floor due to batteries. The carbon fibre hatch appears to have been made extra thick to account for that added length..which also means the rear bumper has a longer lift over area..     Yes.

    This is interesting:

    It translates to "models with the solar panel roof will see a daily maximum of 6.1km. On average, one can expect 2.9km's worth of solar power.

    Yeah if you look at the last photo, it's definitely thicker than a Gen 4 hatch. (And the Gen 4 has plastic bits attached to the metal to give it that 3D look (it's the bulge on either side of the licence plate)

    Larger "crush distance" and more room for structure to protect the battery. It probably also improves aerodynamics, but that was not the original intent. Though knowing how engineers think, they probably were happy to lengthen it a bit and get the aerodynamics improvement as well. I wonder if the improvement would be measurable?

    I am thinking maybe some extra cargo space too to help recover what is lost.
    It looks like that raised floor has a flap/handle to raise it..any space under there?

    This is not bad (and in fact not so far from my estimations made earlier); so on good days the EV range can be increased by 10%.
    It suggests a usable battery charge close to 1 kWh, maybe 800-900 Wh for the extra battery. That could be obtained using the 1.3 kWh battery as also used in the P4, assuming 60-70% usable charge.

    Possibly but I think the length has to do with design (front) and the CF hatch (rear). The double wave read window supposedly offsets some of the lost in aerodynamic efficiency by the front end design. That might explain why the Prius Prime is listed at 0.25 Cd vs. the Gen 4's 0.24.



    Again, there is the same bin like the PiP where you can store the mobile charger, tonneau cover and other small/long items. There's also a small bin on the right side of the cargo area (similar to the left bin that we've had in the Gen 2/3)

    Thanks. So, maybe 4-6 inches "wide" (front to back) and 6-8 inches "deep" (top to bottom), and the width of the tonneau cover?

    Probably closer to 4" front-to-back (4.5-5" is my guess). 6-8 deep sounds right.
