Prius rolls forward at startup on downslope

    I just got my 2010 Prius. I park in front of my house on asphalt that has somewhat of a steep downslope. When I release the parking brake during startup (after shifting to Reverse) it rolls forward. Of course, I quickly step on the accelerator. But that moment it rolls is disconcerting, especially since I do not want to roll into my house which is quite close. Is there any stopping/starting procedure I can do to not have this happen?

    1. Shift into "R" and apply a little power and then release the parking brake.
    2. Back into parking place when parking. Shift into "D" and apply a little power and then release the parking brake.
    3. Install a low 'curb' (aka., treated lumber anchored, garden or yard block that are anchored) and park against them in the evening. This may not work in areas with a lot of snow.

    You have a nice feature called "hill start assist control".
    Please refer to page 243 of the owners manual.

    Another simple solution is to step on, and HOLD, the brake pedal BEFORE you release the Parking Brake, then step on the accelerator.

    The posting suggests the car is pointed down when started. I thought the "hill holding" was just for forward motion.

    I'll do some testing this evening facing an upgrade and downgrade. This sounds like another good excuse to do a little driving. <grins>

    I know about the HAC feature; however, I thought it was to help from rolling backwards on an incline. But I'll try it in my downslope situation.

    I, too, thought "hill holding" was to prevent rolling backwards. But I'll try it out.

    Correct - Hill Hold is for *either* direction. Fortunately for us, our brakes work both ways ;-)

    Coming home from eating out tonight, my wife and I tried it out.

    We always back into the garage, and we stopped at the steepest point, she pressed the brake until it beeped, she took her foot off the brake, and it held, when the 2 seconds were up it released, exactly as in forward.
