Regarding the Prius' first oil change... I have read all of the debates about whether to leave the oil in the car and just have the dealer change it out at the 10K/1 year service, as this is what Toyota has approved and recommends. Some people feel very strongly about changing the oil out sooner to get out any nasty bits of metal, etc. that can cause wear/damage to new engine parts/surfaces. Still others have said that Toyota puts some kind of additive to help protect the car during the break in period (moly additive?) and that changing out the original oil will remove this protection. So I'm thinking of a compromise, just changing the oil filter element to get rid of the filtered out metal shavings and bits, but leave the original oil in and top off with 0w-20. My question is, when I remove the oil filter cartridge housing, will the oil drain then stop after the oil in the cartridge housing drains out? Or will oil continue to drain out until a new cartridge is placed into the housing and then screwed back in? I'm guessing that the majority of oil is in the drain pan and that only what is in the filter and cartridge housing will come out if the drain plug is left in the drain pan. However, some confirmation would be great. Thanks. Also, the car will be inclined back slightly on some Rhino ramps if that makes any difference.
