Just a quick question about tire weight. Do they weigh more inflated or deflated? I'm guessing deflated, but just wanted to verify before I bothered deflating them. I need to ship a set of rims & tires, and obviously the lighter, the better. Thanks in advance.

They weight more inflated, but not much, may be a few ounces tops. More matter (air) = more mass.

    Thanks.

I ran a quick test, the difference was about 3 pounds (and I didn't deflate the tire all the way). Approximately 39 pounds inflated, and 36 pounds deflated.

It should not be able to measure a difference unless you are using a scale that can measure ounces or smaller.

Fill 'em with helium if you want to lighten the load.

3 lbs is too much for the relatively small amount of air in tire. You might have water in your air.

You know - Mike - you might have something there. ;) If one inflated all four tires with hydrogen or helium instead of air - the Prius' curb weight would be a few pounds lighter wouldn't it? :D. I wonder if Toyota thought about making a hybrid synergy drive Airship/Dirigible that got 100 mpg. In the air there are no traffic lights, stop signs, or speed bumps.:D

Those hydrogen-filled tires would be really interesting with hot brakes and sparks. Pop, k-boooom, micro-global warming; as your Eco-friendly car is quickly recycled back into the environment.

And here I was just hoping to that next generation Prius would float away pass the competition.
