There is a new recall (actually a Limited Service Campaign) on the unreliable 2004-early2007 Prius electric inverter water pump (see attached).

Good news - a free replacement of this unreliable part with a redesigned version

Bad News - I Already replaced mine at 150,000 miles.

Good news - according to my dealer, after they do the recall I can submit my earlier receipt for the work and get it rebated.

I will wait a month or so so that the coolant refresh at 200,000 miles is paid for as part of the recall (at least for the inverter coolant loop).

ps: Here is the description from the Toyota site:

2.Limited Service Campaign (LSC) A0N - 2004 through Certain 2007 Model Year Prius Vehicles - Electric Hyrbid Water Pump Replacement Code: A0N Memo
This is a Limited Service Campaign. Please contact your authorized Toyota dealer to schedule an appointment to replace the Electic Hybrid Water Pump (HV Water Pump) before November 30, 2013.
    What is the Condition:
On 2004 through certain 2007 model year Prius vehicles, there is a possibility that air may remain at the bearing of the Hybrid Electric Water Pump (HV Water Pump), causing pump actuation to be slow. In this condition, the temperature of the coolant could rise and become high, which will result in illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Light (check engine light “ON”) for diagnostic code P0A93 with information code 346 (Inverter cooling system malfunction).

Is there an age or mileage limit on this?

since my dealer said to bring it in when they get the part (on order) and I have 186,500 miles on my 04, I hope not.

You should be able to look up your VIN at the Toyota site.

    Hi Jeff,

Does this mean that your dealer intends to replace your pump a second time, although you had previously paid for this to be done 36,500 miles ago?

    Hi Pat,

Yes and the dealer thought that that was strange, but it is the plan.

I presume they are replacing it again because they now have one that doesn't fail. ;)

I bought a replacement pump a couple of years ago, and it is still sitting on my shelf. I wonder if it is the upgraded version, since MY 2008 onwards are not in the recall.

Great news indeed. I'm sitting at 206k and still waiting to bring mine in to have the inverter pump replaced. How does one go about finding out if one's car will be part of this recall? I sure hope mine is.

You go on the Toyota web site and with a little searching find the place to put in your VIN to get a maintenance report.

Since you have to bring in your Prius to actually get the upgrade before filing for the refund, it will be a little difficult for you.

Thanks. I finally registered on the Toyota owner's site and it says (LSC) A0N hasn't been applied to my vehicle.

When did this recall start? My 2007 qualifies and I was wondering if Toyota is going to send out a notice. I had my car serviced in Oct. And there was no mention of this.

My dealer in Connecticut was notified this week. They are starting to order the new water pumps on Monday. I haven't seen the TSB yet, but there was an older one that was on this same subject without a recall.

I believe this recall occurred either Thursday or Friday of last week. I had my car at the dealer on Tuesday for service and there were no opened recalls at that time. Wednesday I logged onto the owner's site to record my tire rotation and there was no recall flagged on my profile screen. I believe Toyota called my house last night about the recall but it was Shabbos and I don't answer the phones.

What is involved in this water pump replacement?

I ask because I really don't want those Stealership service goons scratching up the engine bay of my pristine condition Prius. Once we had them replace an engine under warranty for another vehicle, they scratched the heck out of the engine bay and didn't bother to touch up the paint to prevent rust. When I complained, all they said was that during a major removal and install, scratches happen. I told them that if they treated their customers vehicles like it was their own, it wouldn't happen.

Go to another dealer. If you're covered, you might likely need the inverter pump replaced anyway, like when you hit the check engine light and DTC, as described.

The car might even go into a limp mode to protect the inverter from overheating.
