Religion

It seems to me from reading these boards that most people are either athiests or fundamentalist Christians. The discussions amuse me. Not that I care, but it does seem strange.

Is it possible that fundamentalists have successfully hijacked Christianity to the point that atheism is the only response left? Just wondering --

It seems to me that if you're following some religion (any religion) that "fundamentalist" should be the only way to do it. If the views/beliefs change to match existing culture, isn't that a bit like re-writing history? Odd that most "mainstream" religions frown on the "fundamentalists" for being all bad and nasty... yet the FUNDAMENTAL aspects are what founded the religion.

My guess is that I'll never understand. And really, I'm OK with that.

While Fred's at PriusChat seems a good place to discuss most things in life not related to the Prius, I'm not sure religion is one of them. I'd share my views if I thought they'd be respected, but I've been told to go to hell on too many occasions, merely for stating my point of view. (If those nice people who come knocking don't want my opinion, why do they ask for it?) Otherwise reasonable people seem to blow a gasket when their beliefs are challenged. (To be fair, I've done my share of disrespecting.) I'm trying to stick with what we agree on.

So far, seems like this has been a Catholic-based bitching match, it would be nice to switch to/explore another religion... Maybe even push the bar a bit further and discuss JUDAISM.

The only hateful speech and anger in the thread of intelligent Design is from those who do not believe in God (or the Christian God, Jesus, to be precise.

Go back and read. Open your eyes.

If your definition of fundementalism are peopel who DO NOT COMPROMISE on God...then you are right, you can ONLY be a fundementalist......or not.

What do you mean precisely by "fundamentalist," I guess would be my question. "Fundamentalist" is about as charged and imprecise a word as, say, "terrorist."

"Fundamentalism" means a couple of different things, but in Christianity it is a distinct set of beliefs and dates only from the early 1900's. It was in reaction to new scientific discoveries (Darwinism) and German liberal biblical criticism. "Sola scriptura", the idea that the Christian faith is dependent only upon the Bible, is taken to a length not seen in other Christian sects. Christian fundamentalists are not violent, but can appear insensitive and bigoted. The Southern Baptist Convention is probably the largest group of them, but other fundamentalists you could identify are the folks at Bob Jones University, Jerry Falwell and others.

Politically conservative Christians come from three basic disciplines, fundamentalist churches like the aforementioned Southern Baptists, pentecostal churches like the Assembly of God and Church of God in Christ, and evangelical churches like the non-denominational Calvary Chapels. The pentecostal and evangelical churches still take a literal view of the Bible, but leave more room for interpetation than the more literal fundamentalists.

Add to the mix of religious political conservatives some churches who don't count their numbers among those three groups, like the Latter Day Saints (Mormons) and observant and orthodox Jews, and you have a fairly large group of people. After decades of only religious liberals being politically active, these groups found their voice in the decade following the turbulent 1960s, with Jimmy Carter being one of the first Presidents to secure support among them.

Interestingly, after Jimmy Carter disappointed them, conservative Christians were just fine with Ronald Reagan, who was anything but a fundamentalist. Reagan was a member of a high church, Presbyterian, I think, and not at all a fundamentalist, pentecostal or evangelical. But his social views were conservative.

I have very conservative, traditional theological views combined with a more libertarian outlook on social issues that stems from my Calvinist leanings. Politically, I am conservative since the conservatives seem closer to me on most issues, as long as I can keep from wincing when I hear them talk about social issues.

For those who care, I mean "fundamentalist" in the most fundamental way.

Check out what today's mainstream Mormons feel about the Fundamentalist Mormons who actually follow the teachings of the guy who started the religion.

Ah, I see what you are saying. Bear in mind, though, that to me (and to many Christians like me), Mormonism in any form is a cult -- a hideous perversion of Christ's truth. Strictly held to its true teachings, Mormonism teaches "earned grace," certainly an impossibility in my mind.

So as I hear and think about it, you're basically asking me to compare what one splinter cult thinks about another splinter cult. I believe that they both follow false doctrine.

I guess you can count me in as a fundamentalist and maybe more fundamental than most. Not only do I follow the Bible but I let it interpret itself.

Remember that truth is mutually exclusive of all other “truthsâ€. You can’t have more than one truth. All else is just opinion. People that believe and understand this are perceived as intolerant and hateful. Not so. If you take a principled stand on truth how can you be true to your principles if you accept anything that goes against the truth you believe in? As it says in the Bible “You can’t serve two Masters†and you can’t serve two truths that are contradictory to each other.

I guess I fall under Politically conservative Christians (Church of God ).

Now the Mormans are a little out there you can have multiple wives and you only have sex to make babies...

I talked with a morman he said the southern baptists play banjos in church. LOL I told no they dont...

Jehovas witnesses are a let me cram it down your throat group..

reminds me, I dated a girl that attended the Church of God in Christ and they spoke in tuonges I went with her to one service and they started to speak like that I walked over a cpl of pews and left never to see her or the church again! it really freaked me out...

I'm a former born-again Christian turned agnostic...I'm no longer a supporter of any type of organized religion after being forced into it against my will for the first 18 years of my life.

Non-practicing Catholic here... even went to an all-girls Catholic high school. I've become more spiritual over the years. I believe in God... and I believe that God would not want me to judge my neighbor or think that my own beliefs are better than their beliefs.
