Hi: I just took our Prius into the dealer for the 30,000 checkup. They changed the oil and filter and went through 40 plus checks on a checklist. Most everything passed except three areas failed! They were: Electronic fuel injection flush 129.95, evaporator sterilization and flush 170.00, Air condition service 160.00 Estimate total with shop fees and tax = 562.72. Wow! I did not have this done as I'm not sure if this is a nice to do or a have to do. I could not find any of this in the 30,000 maintenance schedule. What are peoples thoughts on this?

never heard of anyone doing those services at 30k. I suggest you find a more honest dealer.

My thoughts; This dealer is a crook. Either find a better dealer, or do it yourself.

    IIRC at 30K you;

    • Change oil & filter
    • Rotate tires
    • Replace air filter

Everything else is visual inspections. This should be $200 tops, and that's pretty generous given that a professional with proper tools (e.g. hydraulic lift, air tools, etc) could do all of this in 30 minutes.

Wow, sounds like your dealer needed to make a boat payment. Run very quickly to another dealer.

I did see a large yacht parked in the lot! I will now run quickly, away!

definitely. Glad I had enough sense to wait. I saw a number of elderly folks at this dealership and I fear they might fall prey to this hype. Strong words like status Fail, makes you this this is serious.

Did they actually use the expression "failed"? It seems misleading, likely intentionally. Their forte looks to be promoting unnecessary extra services. And I wouldn't doubt when serious diagnostics are needed, they fall short.

See if you can find a more common sense dealership. One simple test: phone several parts departments, ask for info on some item, a little out of the norm, say a block heater. See what they all come back with. The differences can be surprising.

Thanks for the welcome. A friend told me to check out this website and I'm so glad I did. Thank you.

    ,
They did use the term Fail. It was on the vehicle report that was handed to me.

That's pretty deceiving to use the word fail for maintenance that may not be necessary. It's not even a repair. If you complain to the service manager, he might give you a free oil change so they can try to empty your wallet again

Are you having any issues do you feel with any of the listed "failures"?

If you feel you are, on the cheap try this first:

If ac is smelling moldy, spray a good amount if Lysol into where your cabin filter is.

If car feels like it's fueling is off, ie. clogged injectors, try a bottle of fuel injector cleaner for a few bucks avail at any auto parts store.

    Is your ac blowing cold?

If everything seems fine to you, then walk away knowing you just saved a few hundred...and didn't get screwed from the stealership.

it was very astute of you to walk away and educate yourself. your right, they may be taking advantage of seniors, and that could be illegal in some states.

Hope they removed the summer air , and put in winter air in the tires , many dealers will leave in the same air year round

Also, right around 30k miles the crappy oem blinker fluid has been known to get gummy and cause issues.... I truly am surprised that this did not fail as well...??

Thanks for the suggestions. There is nothing wrong , smelly etc with the air conditioning or fueling issues. The only funny smell was the service report.

Here is the service report below called 30K. Sorry it took me a while holidays and all.
