World's population reaches seven billion, celebrated symbolically.

    Reminds me of....

A woman was stopped at a stoplight in a mini-van with a child strapped into each seat. A truck driver looked over and said "Lady, looks like you've just about screwed yourself out of a seat."

Any idea what it'll go down to when Pakistan nukes India (or vice versa)?

The population has almost doubled since I was born.

I guess I'm older than you. It's more than doubled since I've been here. And the whole time, we've been warned about exponential growth and finite resources. Obviously, we're not all thinking with our brains. ;)

    "7 billionth" babies celebrated worldwide"

What's to celebrate? I think the number speaks volumes of how humans are eventually doomed. There were 2.3 billion when I was born, and that was too many.

Except for the roughly 21 million identical twins that are around....

Apparently Africa has the highest incidence of identical twins (as well as in vitro fertilization techniques).

Yep. Natural selection is indeed amazing. We are what we are because DNA replication is imperfect, allowing for errors that ensure variation and the raw material for natural selection.

Some people dismiss evolution as 'chance', which demonstrates a profound misunderstanding of the process. Nature takes so many 'chances' that something is virtually guaranteed to survive, regardless of the prevailing conditions.

And I thought spiderman's comment sounded pretty innocent/sweet...

The World can easily support twice as many people as long as we keep fighting famine, expand into deserts, ensure clean drinking water and many other things for which I have frail hopes.

Until everyone can maintain a decent standard of life, it's time to stop population growth. It's well past time.

That's not a feasible solution as those with less are the ones who benefit the most from getting as many children as possible when every new pair of hands can beg and work for money.

Continuing to grow the population indefinitely is much less feasible. Sooner or later there will be a large scale problem(s) that prevent us from supporting the population of the Earth.

If it's a severe problem, we have already passed that point.

Has the entire population ever been fully supported? Those of us at the top of the food chain have little appreciation for how most of the world lives. When even our pampered and insulated way of life is threatened, the problems must be getting bigger. We'd like to think we're safe from the sixth extinction...

A very large number of people are seriously malnourished, go to bed hungry every night, and lack safe drinking water. At present, we cannot provide for the population of the world. The problem is perhaps more a matter of distribution than production at present. But given the realities of human greed and the existing political and economic systems, there are at present too many people. And since relatively few people volunteer to step out of the game, the only solution I can see is for people to make fewer babies. This comes up against the obstacle that nearly all women are obsessed with the notion that they need to have babies, and few men can resist helping them out with this at every opportunity.

I think the human race is doomed. Our own success is destroying us.

The Earth, of course, will do quite well without us, and life will continue and hardly notice our absence.

slowing/stopping population growth will put a crimp in the way we finance social security. we're already having problems supporting all the retiring boomers.

...not sure where this logic is heading, except to say, the road is paved with good intentions.
