Does anyone know if the Prius can be shifted into neutral without the presence of a hv battery? I want to have a car towed that doesn't have a hv battery inside. Not sure if it can go into neutral??

the 12 volt allows it to shift to neutral when made ready, don't know if missing hv battery will complicate the matter.

The car needs to be towed with the front wheels off the ground, regardless of the HV battery presence / absence. So Neutral or not doesn't really matter, except possibly to make it easier to get the car into position to lift the front.

Other threads have indicated that the car can be dragged out of a parking space. Not great for the tires, but won't hurt the car.

The car is parked front in on a parking spot, tow truck cannot get to the front end. I need to push the car out so the tow truck can get to it. However there's no hv battery so not sure if it'll go into neutral.........and the 12v is dead!

They probably can, not really sure though. It would be easier if I can just get the thing into neutral and push it out of the parking spot

the tow truck can jump that part.....

come to think of it, I think it can be done without the HV. I remember the car can boot up with the HV orange plug taken out. That would be the same as not having an HV.

There is no real "neutral" in a Prius. One of the MGs has to spin to compensate for the engine standing still. The HV battery provides the energy for the MG to act as a motor so as was said earlier, either drag your Prius out or put dollies under the front wheels.

We are discussing moving the car in neutral and the the engine is still but both MGs have to turn if the front wheels are turning. The MG on the drive shaft just turns without power when the car rolls in neutral, but the other MG has to be spun so that the motor can remain stationary.

It sounds like you might not be the most Prius savvy, but be forewarned that jumping a Prius can cause major damage. If the terminals are reversed which is easy for people that do it everyday to screw up because they are going fast, you are going to blow the inverter and fusible links. Big sparks are also not good for it like attaching a live good battery to the Prius with jumper cables. Smart cables or a form of battery boost that can physically connect without being electrically connected and then electrically connect to charge.

    1) I don't doubt what Jeff is saying because he is way smarter than me
    2) On my 01, there is a release that allows one to put it in "neutral" with no power applied (not in ready, key turned off). To my knowledge, this simply disengages the park pawl or manually pulls it out. In the Gen II, the parking pawl is electric (12V). I can't remember who it was but I did see a post on here a long time ago that talked about how to jumper the parking pawl to get it to release. I'm pretty sure it was imwoody36 who is the owner of autobeyours.com.

I would give him a call since he's not on here much anymore.

Thanks for the reminder about jumping the car. I have an extra battery on hand that I can throw in there, but thought it would be faster to just use the tow truck to jump it, boot the system and get it into neutral. I'm not driving the car anywhere as it doesn't have a hv battery.
