I'm a New-be here with my two week old Prius Plug-in and wondering if it's feasible to invest in a
240 volt charger setup. been doing some reading on the net and kind of like the Leviton EVB-32-5 unit BUT the leviton EVB-22 is cheaper.. And i suppose does the same job.. So who's got what??
OR should I just stick with the 120 volt cable that came with the car.. I do like shorter charge times
as I'm in and out several times a day. Also I don't have a garage and I'm charging from an outlet on the side of the House off the driveway and i wonder and worry about rain and snow. It will rain and I will need to charge up everything is going to get wet UGH

:)I have a Leviton Level 2 16a charger at home. I upgraded my factory EVSE cable to 240V Level 2 that I use at work. If you have plenty of time to charge, keep it simple with what you have. I'm in for the long haul, so I didn't mind the expense (much).

i have the diy job. i love 1 1/2 half hour charging because i don't like to keep the battery full, and you never know when you have to go somewhere. i try to keep it half charged, that way i can be out in 45 minutes if necessary. the shorter the better imo. don't worry about being outside, many public chargers are.

I use a Leviton level 2 at home and the cable that came with the car to charge at work. When I get home from work, I plug the car right in because I usually do some running around.

EVSE upgrade (240 and 120) was $300 and I keep it always at the house in a 240 plug. Bought another 120 on eBay for $300 to take to work.

It is worth the investment to go the 240VAC way.

I went the EVSE upgrade and use my dryer outlet which is in the garage. I really like the ability to charge more quickly so I can charge up between errands and going out. I was well worth it to me.

Same here. Can get home from work, sit down and read the news, then jet back out to the gym or market. The extra 120 I bought on eBay is so that I don't short out my 240 by moving around too much. Have had it a year, and ended up getting a short in the cable because of all of the movement and the EVSE has to hang from a 120 at work. So I got the portable off ebay. The cables are thicker and sturdier, but not so friendly to untangle in the cold months.

I saw no benefit to faster charging times of L2 besides small trickle charge loss. I rarely go out 3 hours after i get home, let alone 1.5 hours. The cost of an L2 charger or even an EVSE upgrade is prohibitive. I thought about installing an L2 charger now for my future plugin but within the year I've owned my PiP, costs have gone down dramatically. There's probably a lot more price falling in the near future. Maybe when prices fall into the single Benjamin, then I'll purchase one

How do you secure the cable at work?

No need to secure. We have security in the parking lot.

Don't forget, part of the Level 2 EVSE price is deductible on your federal income taxes.

And in some states too. Between Federal and Oregon, I'll be recovering over $500 of the cost of the level 2, and I'm "future proof" for when I get my Tesla. ;)

    Thanks!

So does it have to be installed by a professional to count? Or does any ol' EVSE we buy online count as long as we "keep the receipt?"

Park your front tire on top of the cable OR use a 12ga extension cord.

Plug the extension cord into the outlet, run the cord in window and plug it into your EVSE. Run the plug from your EVSE back through the window and plug it into the car's charger port. Roll up your windows so the cord is snug but not crimped.

You you choose to park on the cable I would recommend buying a special wire protector that is designed to be parked on. They are inexpensive.

I use an upgraded PIP EVSE to charge my Volt at 240v. I think it was $229 for the upgrade. IMO the PIP doesn't need an expensive $500 240v EVSE.
