Something happens when I open the driver door

I have had my Gen III Prius for a week now. I had a Gen II for three years, so I am used to the car doing things on its own. My car does something new. When the car is off (parked in my garage where it is quiet), as soon as I open the driver's door, I hear a whirring. It's not unlike the sound of the old coolant pump on my Gen II.

Clearly the Toyota engineers are being proactive. Anyone know what this sound is?

When I first received the car the car took about 3-4 seconds to pressurize the breaking system. I have noticed that time it takes to do this is getting longer and loner with time.

The car is now 3 months old and I have 10,000 miles on it. It takes about 10-15 second some times to finish. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Every Prius does this. Can someone comment on how long it takes and if it is getting longer.

Every Gen III Prius does this. Gen IIs don't do it until you press on the brakes or power up.

I posted the question in a Prius III thread. My target question was to those that own a Gen III and would be reading this thread.

How long does it typically take?

    A ) 1-2 seconds
    B ) 10-15 seconds
    C ) longer then 15 seconds
    D ) about an hour

The length of time my pump runs seems to be tied to the ambient temperature. Lower temps = longer run times. I don't know if there's a true correlation or not, it's just anecdotal.

Or, I believe it depends on how long the time between each drive. For example. If I get in my car after letting it sit overnight, it takes a little while. Then, say if I drive the car to the grochery store, and come back out - the pressure buildup doesn't take near as long as it did in the morning. Basically, I believe the longer the car is left set - the longer it takes.

I say it is less than 10 seconds. I notice it mostly first thing in the morning. I have 3,000+ miles.

Mine runs just under 10 seconds after sitting in the garage overnight.

I too find if you stop the car for a couple hours, it runs only 3-4 seconds.

i am going to start timing it. Sometimes mine goes more then 10 seconds. I wonder if it is an issue.

Do note that while the GII doesn't pressurize the brake system when you open the door (and the SKS system "sees" your fob it, and the GIII does other things. The car "gets ready for you" to go. It's in the owners manual!

If you get in without the FOB some things happen (if you sit for long enough), but if you get in -with- the FOB lots of things happen. ;)

    My car is so smart.

I wouldn't be to concerned in all honesty. I will keep a check on mine as well since the temps are down now too. I will actually check it with a second hand next time. I did the normal 1001, 1002....

    Will post my result.....;)

The length of the noise/whir is directly proportional to the lengths between each drive. If the interval is short enough, I don't hear it at all. It is clearly longer when I take it in the morning. I have never timed it though and probably never will.

    Judgeless,

As promised I clocked it tonight with my second hand on my watch...with ambient Temps in the 40's, car sitting 14 hours, 13 seconds. I think it's all relative to temps, length of time car has been sitting, etc... I think your just fine with your numbers....

    :)
