    So... the modding has begun...

Have some 3m carbon fiber vinyl left over from a previous project so decided to spruce up my dash a little... here are a few pix from tonight's project:D will have to tackle the door panels later this week.

    Looks great!

Question. How hard was it to take out the center console? Thanks!

That is pretty cool. Reminds me of the 2004 Solara SE dash.

    thanks for the kudos:rockon:

the material is actually a matte finish. i guess the flash made it look shinier than it actually is. will have to take some pictures during the day.

taking out the dash is pretty easy. There are no screws; just clips. Just lift up from the corners (starting with the bottom piece first). The only tricky part is that the top piece is attached to the trim piece next to it, so you have to remove both pieces together.

Great mod xenon! I tried something similar about a year ago, but unfortunately the material I was wishing ended up being too thick. This caused the buttons to "stick" when depressed. Guess I should've gone with the vinyl material.

Nice work. I have some 3M DiNoc CA-421 black to do mine when I replace my radio with a Nav unit..

Did you need to use any adhesive activator?

How do you deal with the edges where you make the cutouts for switches?

the smaller buttons are cutouts while the larger button are tucked in on the edges. Also, all the sides are tucked. i didn't use any adhesive activator as i haven't found them to be necessary with the 3M vinyl (in my experience at least). just a good wipe down with some rubbing alcohol and a paper towel.

anyone know if the panels on the door (where the window switches are) just pulls out? or is it screwed in from behind?

You have to take off the silver trim panel first and then you could access that panel you are mentioning. The silver trim panel is held in place by some tabs. You'll just need to wedge between the bottom edge of the silver trim (start at the upper corner) and door, create a gap and the pull up. It's about the same effort as removing the center console cover.
You could reference my album for reference of how it appears:

Sorry.. that was a pretty bad picture link. I was attempting to link my album but instead linked that one picture. Here's a better picture of the trim piece removed:

The black window control panel then lifts off, and you could remove it completely by unscrewing a couple of screws holding it in together.

that picture was a great help:thumb:

had some time today to finish up the project. Below are the pix. Now I just have to figure out what to do with the yucky cloth material on the door inserts.

Katzkin just supplies some vinyl upholstery that matches their seat upholstery and you glue it on right over the stock mouse fur door panel. I haven't done mine yet but saw some pictures of examples on other cars and they looked good.

Your switch panel DiNoc work looks great!

Thanks! A sharp knife and steady heads goes a long way:D

With the door panel, the part I haven't figured out is the revets. I understand that you have to drill them out for the panel to come off. Then, rip off the cloth and glue in the new leather inserts... But how do you put in the new rivets? Or is there another way to get the panel to stay in place?

Remove the rivet head with a spade bit.
    http://www.professional-power-tool-guide.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/drill-bits-spade.jpg
Just drill deep enough to cit off the head and don't drill into the panel. Leave the plastic column part of the rivet there. The cheapest low grade spade bit is good enough for this job.

If the rivet column is hollow like it was on the panels beside my rear seat back, you should be able to find sheet metal screws or push in panel fasteners to hold it in place. I haven't had my door panels off yet so am guessing at what's there based on what I saw someplace else in the car. I might get to them next week, if I do I will post some pictures.
