What will happen? The usual. They'll shop the deal around to others who have offered more. Nevada will get some, not all they expect.

The very first thing they will do is see that the NV legislators puts into law all the benefits promised. If memory serves me correct, the first Tesla factory was announced to be in New Mexico....but that never happened.

That factory in NM was supposed to be in my old back-yard -- well almost. The local news was always tentative although I do not know the specifics.

I doubt it. Low cost volume manufacturing is going to require tight local integration. If this was just about any other company I'd look forward to the state spending their money and then finding the construction 'under review.'

In this case, all I can say is I hope Tesla/Musk build another 500 of 'em. GREAT news

...$4- to 5-billion to build the plant?
If true I did not realize the magnitude.
Probably could build 3 large coal fired power plants for that kind of money...not that I want to, but I am just saying holy cow that's a big Twinkie.

We'll see. Hard for a leopard to change its spots. It's what they do.

Interesting story that the industrial park where the Tesla plant is to be built is owned by Lance Gilman, who also owns the Mustang Ranch.

    Could there be synergies?

Well at least the workers have some place to go for lunch. They have food there, right? ;)

    Always a possibility.

Of course you realize that I have no idea what you are talking about ?
I do understand 'synergy' though: that is slang for "screw the stockholders, downsize labor, and give a bonus to the CEO." Less likely

Here is a pdf from Tesla about the Gigafactory.

50 GWh of battery production hoped for in 2020
They also say 500,000 Tesla cars a year, which implies 100 kWh per car.

I think Tesla will find a large market for less expensive cars that have 50 kWh batteries. That would be a cool ONE million cars a year, or closing in on 10% of annual US car sales. You have to hand it to Musk -- he thinks big.

Next factory I hope for: a TeraFactory, to bundle PV+Tesla+ battery for off-grid home and car. That is where speculative investors can look.

Mustang Ranch = Something legal in NV usually not legal elsewhere. I would assume synergy was related to a tit for tat arrangement. (Tat = solar powered Mustang Ranch?)

Now that I have read a bit about the GigaFactory, I have to say that siting in NV was a foregone conclusion. Musk involved the other states just to keep NV honest at the bargaining table and to collect a Billion $ of participation. Consider:
    1. The only large scale Li mining operation in the US and the area with the largest Li resource in the country ? the Reno area, and NV at large
    2. Railroad from Reno to Fremont (the site of Tesla car assembly.)
    3. Least red tape for the massive PV and Wind farms Tesla will put up to power the factory ? NV
    4. The closest to Silicon Valley (Tesla HQ): Reno. In fact, it is within one charge driving distance :)

Not really, there are 48 Governors who were equally successful. But on a serious note, let's keep politics out of this thread . . . unless you want the 3 or 4 of us in Freds House of Politics to be the only ones who see this thread.

Musk is building whilst other motor manufacturers are contracting and consolidating.

Looking forward to the Tesla 3, though from reports here they'll have to up the quality of their interiors and general quality control or they'll start to get a reputation. Otherwise I can't wait.
