That's it, I am really tired of that STUPID Home Depot add that SPAMS us every time I visit the site...

HOME DEPOT TAKE NOTE..... I NOW BUY MY MATERIALS AT LOWES!!!

If this stupid ad wants to be a banner like we normally see at the top of the page, that's fine with me.
But hijacking the link to display a full page ad is UNACCEPTABLE!!!

I HATE SPAM, I HATE HOME DEPOT!!!

Bring it up with Danny. The site probably makes money for allowing the ad.

hmm... i stopped using Home Depot years ago. at first it was because i frequently would go there to get something that they did not have. a significant portion of the shelves were empty.

later my nephew got a seasonal job there. the reason the shelves were empty was because of their unrealistic cost control policy which prohibited overtime. he stated there were mountains of crates set for unpacking and display that were re prioritized as new stuff came in. this created a situation where everyday hardware was left to run out while the seasonal stuff was put out.

hearing this didnt really affect me at all since i had simply started going to Lowes years before. then i moved and have a Lowes 2 miles away

I don't like to block the ads, since they bring in revenue, but eventually I couldn't stand the pop up ads and server slowdowns.

My understanding is that the ad still being streamed into the PC therefore the site still count the ad being accessed. The PC with ad blocker simply filter out the ad so the end user doesn't see the ad. I've been using firefox + adblockerPlus for a few years now and didn't realize homedepot has full page ads.

Nope. Web pages don't load that way. First, your browser sends a request to the Priuschat site for a specific page. PriusChat sends all the information needed to assemble the page back. It can send back the text and the HTML formatting to lay out the site. However, all of the images and ads are loaded differently. Those are included as links, and your browser then has to follow the links and download that content separately, assembling the whole thing at the end.

a program like adblockerPlus typically has a list of ad sites, and simply blocks any download from those sites. So when you load PriusChat and it sends a link to download an ad from google's ad server, your browser simply chooses not to load that information. That way, pages load faster, as you aren't pulling down as much information (and you aren't pulling down any information from often laggy ad servers).

So, by using adblockerplus, or almost any other ad blocking software, you end up not loading the ads at all, and the site your visiting doesn't get credit for displaying the ads (thus looses out on revenue).

Adblock and Web of Trust (WOT) are available for Safari as well as Firefox. The latter references a database of user ratings to tell you how trustworthy a site is. If you Google something, each entry has an associated symbol from WOT.

everytime i get mad at the depot or lowes, i go to the other place the next time. it's like a game of pingpong. although, lowes has received more of my business this year due to a number of 10% off coupons they have sent my way. re: the ad, if danny gets paid, i'll put up with it. but i don't have to like it.:)

I've said it in every other thread of folks complaining about ads, and I'll say it here. If Danny puts a "donate" button somewhere, I'll gladly kick in more cash to help host the board than he loses by me using Adblock.

Do any of you guys know it takes money to run a high-volume forum?

Internet revenues generally are down, so Danny had to do something.

Maybe if the ads were for the Volt? :p

If the ad was not Home Depot, it would be someone else. ;)

Believe me, I know. I also know that obnoxious ads that take over your browser are the wrong something.

I'm on more than one board that runs quite nicely from voluntary user donations. Whenever the admins run a pledge drive, it never takes more than a few days for them to say "OK, we got enough money to run the board for another year! Thanks everybody!"

Well, at least it's not ads for Evony (NSFWish).

Of course the donations should be on a sliding scale. Richer members should simply donate more. Oh members with high thanked count should donate the most.

Members with high post counts that have been thanked a lot should receive a cut of the proceeds. ;) :D

I think we do. I don't object to ads, but I expect a fair trade-off. The ads shouldn't hijack my web browser, and the ad servers need to serve up the ads in a reasonable amount of time.

Yep - I don't think you can blame HD here. In fact - I wouldn't be surprised to see the same Lowes ads, too.
