Anti-piracy stuff is a mere inconvenience. It probably won't take long to crack, I'm sure.

why bother pirating Microsoft software ??? or paying for retail boxes ??

they make you take a course now.. but for $300 a year you can tell Microsoft that you are a consultant, and you can sign up for the Microsoft action pack, and get all the Microsoft licenses you will ever need!! 10 vista business and 10 Microsoft office licenses alone. and server!, maps, you practically get a 20 lb box full of all the Microsoft business software you will ever need, plus quarterly updates..

if you do not renew annually your supposed to destroy the cds, but thats another topic, heh

If they really wanted to get even with the Chinese, they would let them use Windows.

I think that completely blacking the screen is not the proper approach. If they can make such a clear determination that the software is fake, they can be much more creative than that.

I say the printers should not work. Or the internet connection should time out at random intervals. Lock out the ability to install any new software.

In other words: quod quem deus vult perdere, dementat prius

    Right on! :D

Keep in mind that Microsoft Genuine Advantage is a program, and it's a program written by the programmers at Microsoft, which is to say a pack of incompetent morons.

Even a good program cannot determine reliably if the software has been paid for, and MGA is a program from a company infamous for bad programs.

I have heard reports of people who had a licensed copy of Windows, and MGA shut them down mistakenly.

I agree with Dogfriend: The best punishment for pirating Windows or other MS software is to have to use the crap!

Instead of a bullet to the head, why not a variation of the Chinese water torture? Every few minutes change a few bytes on the disk and eventually the system will fail. If the byte changing had gone on for a few months their backups would be next to useless.

Microsoft would rather that the pirates would steal their software instead of the competition...

Daniel, I know you're sometimes... well... you like to stretch the truth when you don't like something. And you know I'm no fan of Windows... in fact, I haven't used Windows on a regular basis this century.

But to call them a pack of incompetent morons is completely wrong. They've pulled off something that Apple couldn't do, which is retain backwards compatibility with EVERY version of windows. It's very easy to point that out as the major problem with the windows architecutre, because it is... but it's still a hell of a technical achievement.

That brilliant "technical achievement" is obtained by bloating
code completely out of control so it includes all the old stuff,
in the name of backward compatibility but usually re-introducing
countless security holes that were supposedly fixed over time.
Don't hold that out as any sort of "virtue" in their case. They
didn't handle it right, and just dragged along all that old
known-bad baggage this whole time and occasionally slapped a
piece or two of duct-tape on it instead of going back and fixing
the large CLASSES of problems inside by writing truly cleaned-up
    code.
    .
Read this down a ways for a prime example. Block one UUID, a tiny
point fix, instead of understanding that they need to rewrite that
15-year-old RPC crap from the ground up because it was NEVER designed
to be robust in a hostile environment.

Well, I really don't know any other way to do it... and yes, it introduces holes upon holes... but like I said, I don't use Windows, and hopefully never will.

What strikes me as interesting is that the technology exists to basically eliminate using an operating system entirely for 95% of all office needs.

    Imagine this:
    1) Walking up to a computer, turning it on, and it's ready 1 msec later.
    2) Select the application, type your document, or spreadsheet, browse your web site, etc.
    3) Turn it off and walk away. Everything else is automatic.

It truely amazes me that nobody is doing this, instead we have everyone convinced that one operating system is better than another.

Yep, I say force all those nasty Chinese to use Windows until they agree to do things the way we like.

On the other hand, to all those China bashers, to everyone who thinks the Chinese are evil for pirating Windows, our government is (barely) afloat only because the Chinese have bought trillions of dollars of U.S. Treasury notes. If the Chinese stopped lending us money today, our government would default tomorrow.

Letting them have free copies of Windows is a small price to pay to avoid a complete economic collapse, which would make the present depression and crisis look like a Sunday-school picnic by comparison.
