There was a poster here who complained to Toyota Customer Service when the dealer refused to do the changes. An hour later he received a call from the dealer asking him to come in to have the changes done at no charge.

While driving to Florida recently (from New England) I overnighted with friends in North Carolina and was surprised to see they had a 2007 red Prius which they bought new. While discussing our cars (a Prius chat) I mentioned the reverse beep (which I had disabled by the dealer on my GIII). They said that they, and friends that drive with them in their Prius, hate it and it drives them crazy. They also said their dealer told them there was nothing they could do about it. I got on-line, wrote down the instructions, and 2 minutes later we killed the beep. Needless to say, they were thrilled and invited me to visit any time. I wonder how many Prius owners are slowly going insane while their dealers stay ignorant about the car they sell and service.

hello people i just ordered my prius on earth day and i realized it later in the day i hadnt planed it like that hahaha! but upon reading this discusion i think the reasson that the drivers side beeping sound for the seat belt can be disconected, is because in some countrys its actualy legal for the taxi driver not to whear one! on the other hand its the law for the passengers.its like this in greece i am actualy a taxi medalion owner in athens greece and i just ordered the car for a replacement to a 407 peugeot that gave me a whirll of problems up untill now! I HOPE THIS ONE LIVES UP TO ITS REPUTATION!!!! sory for my spelling but its as good as it gona get !! one thing is for sure the back up sound is going to drive me nuts i didnt even drive it yet and i am searching on how to eliminate it! hehe. athough the peugeot had a diferent philosophy on the beeping sound for the pasenger seat,it actualy had a keyhole on the pasenger side that eliminated the operation of the pasenger air bags and at the same time the beeping sound! but ofered no rellief for the driver side thus having to drive the car fith the seat belt permanently locked in place prior to being seated in the car! but the driver of the car is liable for the passengers so the sound aids in helping him to enforce the seatbelt law that the isurance companies ask for! me i just like for them to step out the cab alive so that i can get paid ! haa

Anybody know the location of the speaker that does the beeping noise? I'm thinking I might cut the wire if I can get to it without tearing out panels. I can't think of any noises from the car that I need/want to hear. Anybody done this?

    Hi Jay,

I just bought the 2011 Prius III. I live here in Bristow, VA...what dealership did you bring yours to to get the beeps undone? I'm looking for the seatbelt and the backup. If I could "ungray" the navigation safety stuff, that would be great too. Any ideas?

Got new '11 Prius Four last week. Returned to dealer today to see if backup/reverse warning beep could be changed to a single beep when shifting into reverse. Service dep't. didn't know anything about it but made an appointment for me. I saw my salesman and mentioned it. The salesman left his desk, grabbed a netbook computer from service, came to my car in the parking lot, hooked up to the OBDII computer port, and within 7-10 minutes had it figured out and changed, all at no additional cost to me. I was happy about that.

I tried to change the way my doors locked on my 2011 by the instructions in the manual but was unable so I guess I'll be heading to the dealer soon myself. I bought mine through AAA so who knows if I'll be accepted with open arms at the local dealer. Wish me luck.

I asked the dealership to turn off the beep when I got my 10,000 mile free oil change. They are going to charge $53.50 for it. I didn't realize there would be a charge as the salesman just told me to have the service department make the change after I found out I couldn't turn it off myself after researching (was able to turn off myself with our earlier model Prius). I called the service dept and was told, yep there is a charge and that is just something that Toyota did; not sure why. Great.

No, talk to sales. The changes are part of the dealer prep and there should be NO charge! They are supposed to ask the customer what settings they prefer and make them. There is a list in the owners manual. If you get the run-around complain to Toyota US (the 1-800 number in your manual).

I'm not generally much of a forum poster, but when I saw this thread, I felt that I just had to share my experience with disabling the reverse beeps in my new 2012 Gen III Prius 3. Not to sound dramatic, but reading this could save your life. The incident that happened to me over the reverse beep almost cost me mine. After owning my Prius for one week, I came to the same conclusion that many of you have that the constant beep while in reverse was just too annoying to live with. After some quick reading on this forum, I headed over to my dealer and asked them to disable the beeps. They did it in about 5 minutes. After this, it only beeped once initially when I put it in reverse. I was happy and no longer annoyed. Two days later I got into my car in the morning to start my commute to work. After putting the car into reverse, I got a text message so I just held the brake with my foot while I answered it. After several text messages back and forth for about a minute, I was ready to get on the road, but I remembered that I had left my work ID card in the house. I'm not sure exactly why I did what I did next, but I blame it on the distraction of the text exchange that took longer than anticipated, combined with the fact that my Prius makes absolutely no noise when stopped. I opened the door and stepped outside the car without pushing the Park button. What happneened next occurred in the span of 4 to 5 seconds. The car (naturally) started to reverse with me standing on the pavement between the drivers door and drivers seat. I grabbed the top of the door with my left hand and the top of the car with my right hand. The door swinging made my left hand unsteady and I started to topple backwards. As I did so, my left foot started to drag while I hopped on my right foot trying not to get knocked over by the door and run over by the car's left front wheel. Since I needed my right foot to hop on, it was difficult to get my right leg into the car with the swinging of the door and the reversing of the vehicle, and my left foot dragging. After quite a few hops I was able to get my right foot inside the vehicle while my left foot continued to drag. I had just enough toe on the brake that I was able to stop the car. Remember that this all occurred in the span of four to five seconds. The acceleration rate of a Prius in reverse with no one in the driver seat is fast!

I got a quick lesson that morning on the importance of the beep. I'll grant you that I was distracted, and that this might not happen to you, but for me, this wake up call was what I needed to take the vehicle back to the dealer and have the reverse beeps turned back on. One thing I can guarantee you is that this would never have occurred had I not asked for the beeps to be disabled. As an alternate solution to this problem, I think that Toyota should put a seat weight switch in the vehicle, similar to the one that is in the passenger seat for the airbag, so that if it is in reverse and the driver steps out of the vehicle, it will not move.

Just thought some of you that we're contemplating disabling the constant beep should know this. It may not dissuade you from having it disabled anyway, but maybe it will give you a little more awareness of what can happen if you are not more paying more attention than I was that morning...

But this could easily happen in D as well where you have no beep. My years of driving a manual has given me the habbit of setting parking brakes before opening the the door.

Not to discount your experience, glad to hear that you are ok. But the issue that you are describing could have happened in any vehicle, especially with an automatic transmission. I know of no other vehicle that has an interior beep/alarm when the car is in reverse. I have a 2010 that I purchased in June and my mechanic is going to shut it off when I take it in for an oil service and transmission drain/replace.

Hey, I appreciate your post as i have been contemplating this customization. I had even thought about my mind maybe being conditioned to hearing that beep already(pavlov's theory). After reading your experience, i think ill just stick to customizing the seat belt option. Thank You!

When you get a call or text, put the car in park BEFORE you start blabbing! Seriously, you would have sat there for minutes with it beeping while you chatted?

Stepping out of a car left in gear is not the car's fault. That's operator error.
