Tom Hanks has put his 2004 Plug-In Prius on the auction block in an effort to raise money for a charity called Welcome Back Veterans, an initiative created by Major League Baseball to assist OEF/OIF veterans and their families with deployment-related mental health concerns.
"Welcome Back Veterans is offering crucial support services to America's military men and women and their families," said Hanks. "When it comes to supporting our veterans and their families, I am proud to do whatever I can."
Hanks' 2004 Prius appears to be a Package 9 and comes complete with HID healights, Navigation, aftermarket leather seats, a Hymotion 40-mile PHEV pack, only 24,000 miles on the odometer, and Tom Hanks' personal signature on the glove box.
Bidding opened at 1pm and has opened at $15,000. Bidding on Tom Hanks' 2004 Prius ends on July 19th.
Check out the auction here on ClubCharity.com.

    Great cause. Great guy.

Only 24k miles on it!? Sounds more like it was a lawn ornament that a means of transport.
  3. GrumpyCabbie

Nobody is forcing him to give it away. Good on him. Maybe he didn't get the full use out of it at 24k but so what.

It's a great cause and a great offering. Well done Hanks, good on ya.

Since Tom is auctioning off his 2004, is he getting a 2010 or 2011 Prius plug in?

This reminds me of that Seinfeld episode....where George thinks he's bought Jon Voight's Labaron. LOL.
  6. bagwell
props to Tom Hanks for caring!

    Let's see:
    24,000 / 7 ~= 3,400 miles/year
He might as well get a Leaf.

I'm pretty sure he will... like the EV1 and the eBox he had before ;)

Yea - I understand his RAV-4ev has WELL under 30,000 miles on it too. I guess that's the result of having so many gadang EV's to choose from (turning green w/ envy). Doesn't he ALSO have the scion box car EV?

loved the green mile, hated that stranded on an island movie.

You really missed it ... if you missed / didn't love, 'Saving Private Ryan'.

Tom Hanks FLIES for most of his traveling. he only uses the car while in town. he was on Leno and stated that he is on the road 3 weeks of every month. so not a lot of time to drive
  13. bisco
no, he has lots of great movies. i even like you've got mail everytime i flip by it and my wife makes me stop. i just thought the stranded movie was dull. maybe it was too subtle for me.:)

check out the auction site. gives a lot more detail.

The car is in good but not showroom condition. It has the normal bumps and bruises of a 6-year-old car, however they are authentic Tom Hanks bumps and bruises! No accidents, no airbags deployed just some side and bumper scratches along with the general wear of being driven by Tom Hanks for the past 6 years.

dent or no dent, i am sure it will soon be out of my price range. for $15,000 i would do it though

    Tom Hanks movies i loved;

Splash does not count. not a great movie and during my adolescence i only went to see it for Daryl Hannah's ass.

Forrest Gump is on my all time top ten, so will have to mention it. Philadelphia was an award winner, so that was good. the Green Mile combines him as one of my favorite actors along with Stephen King, one of my favorite fiction writers (#1 will always by John D. MacDonald. Tolkien rates an honorable mention but only did one great work. MacDonald probably did around 100 ) so a cant lose combo there.

also as one of the major forces behind "Band of Brothers" (i have only been moved enough to purchase movies on DVD one time and this is the one time) that alone make me forever indebted to him

but there was also Dragnet, i loved it...no many others did. Apollo 13, Toy Story (does that count?? once again involved in ground breaking cinema) Catch Me if You Can, etc. it does really go on and on.

I can't believe there are some here that are missing the point. Even light criticism? Come on, who cares if he only drove it once in a while? Who cares what he's getting or what he should have bought? He's donating it for a fantastic cause, try keeping the focus on just that.
    1 people like this.

Anyone know how much it sold for ? Yesterday, 4 hours before the end, there were 5 bids with the highest at $21K but today the auction is gone :(
  18. DaveinOlyWA
If at things sold for 21,000 I will be so pissed off I assumed it would least 40 grand
  19. tredstone
I don't have an issue with Tom Hanks auctioning it off, although I do dislike the period where some celebrities were buying a Prius because it seemed to be the "cool" thing to do, and nowadays you see them driving around in large land rovers or jeeps.
