America has a lot fewer functioning Ford Explorers these days.

The number one vehicle destroyed under the Cash for Clunkers program, the Transportation Department says, was the Ford Explorer (1998 edition). Number two, the Ford Explorer (1997). Number Three...you guessed it. The '96 model.

Woohoo! I own the second place most discarded vehicle in America!

I hope they send a few of them to pick and pull instead of crushing them all - I might need some spare parts someday. ;)

I don't believe any parts are spared.

Not true.. only the engine and drivetrain are wrecked. All other parts are made available.

I thought this too, but it seems they only destroy the engine and tranny and then send the rest to a junkyard to be parted out. Sounds a lot better to me than just destroying the whole car!

I read on a different forum (Explorer) that it was the dealers option on the remainder of the vehicle. It seems less wasteful if they allow them to be parted out - although this is somewhat at odds with the goal of getting the guzzlers off the road.

My Explorer is part of the SUV Sequestrationâ„¢ program - I have put less than 2k miles on it since getting the Prius. If I sell it, the new owners would drive it more than I do, so I keep it in my driveway.

It was shown last Sunday on 60minutes that all the clunkers are crushed, not to junk yards.
