Toyota Hybrid Supra participates 24 hour race in Japan

    Toyota developed a special racing Hybrid Supra for the 24 hours race in Japan.

    5 pm: 1st position, raining and replaced with rain tires
    6 pm: 1st position, drivers are saying no problem
    7 pm: 1st position, the 2nd is Porsche 911 GT3 on the same lap
    8 pm: 1st position, the 2nd is car#1 Porsche 911 GT3, 1 lap behind
    9 pm: 1st:#039 Toyota Supra HV-R 154 laps:2nd #1 Porsche 911 GT3 151 laps:3rd #8 Porsche 911 GT3 150 laps

    engine: modified 3UZ－FE V8, base engine is used on Lexus LS/GS/SC 430
    displacement: 4,480 cc
    engine power: more than 480 ps @ 6,800 rpm
    engine torque: more than 52 kg-m @ 5,600 rpm
    front motor: 10 kW X 2 (in-wheel motor)
    rear motor: 150 kW
    vehicle weight: more than 1,080 kg

    Is this Supra hybrid based on HSD? If it is, this will be the first with in-wheel motors to make AWD.

    We don't know the detail.
    But, you're right it is the first with in-wheel motors AWD.
    The Lexus LS 600h is a mechanical AWD.
    However, the Supra seems to have a super-capacitor storage device in addition to the NiMH battery.

    16 hours in (06:00 JST) and the hybrid has led the entire way. They're currently 9 laps ahead of the Porsche 911s in 2nd and 3rd place at 379 laps. Can you say Butt kicking.

    What will be interesting to see will be what the fuel economy was compared to the other cars. How much fuel was used compared to the others, and how many pit stops were required compared to everyone else.

    08:00, 7 hours to go, Prius has pulled to an 11 lap lead and is at 426 laps. We briefly dropped to only 9 lap lead after pitting at 403, but clearly they're pulling away again.

    No major problems on the Supra.
    The tire size is 330/40R18 on both front and rear.

    Number 2 and 3 were both 20 laps behind.
