TPMS after Sears visit

Had Sears install three new tires ordered from TireRack. They replaced the TPMS in the new tires. A day later the yellow TPMS light came on. I inflated all tires to 46psi (standard for me) and ensured they are maintaining proper pressure. Three days later light still comes on every time I start it.
I am suspecting Sears may need to recalibrate the sensors they installed, or perhaps they installed incorrectly? Is this something only Toyota can handle?
Anyone have similar experience with non-dealer installing new sensors?
    Thanks,
    Jeremy

Was planning on taking it back to Sears to have them investigate.

Was the system initialized after the new tires were installed? You can do this following the procedure outlined in the owners manual using the switch located under the steering column.

To initialize the system, perform the following:

    1. Park the vehicle in a safe place and
    the hybrid system is off.
    2. Adjust the pressure of all the installed
tires to the specified cold tire inflation
pressure level. (See “Tires” on page
    434.)
    3. Turn the “POWER” switch to “IG!ON”
    mode.
    4. Push and hold the tire pressure warning
reset switch until the tire pressure
warning light blinks slowly three times.
    5. Wait for a few minutes with the “POWER”
    switch selected in “IG!ON” mode,
and then turn the hybrid system off.

If you push the tire pressure reset switch
while the vehicle is moving, initialization is
    not performed.

Are you sure Sears installed new TPMS sensors? Most tire shops service the existing sensors with a kit when they install new tires. I think mine cost about $2 per tire at Costco.

If Sears did replace the sensors then you will need to go to the dealer and have the new sensors programmed in the car. I believe another choice would be to change the serial numbers to match the original sensors.

Thanks for the info everyone. I will attempt to initialize the sensors first. If that doesn't work, I will take to dealer for reprogramming.

    Thanks again for the responses!

    Hold up.
While I only use genuine Toyota sensors I am pretty sure there are aftermarket ones that can be cloned to imitate the originals. I would try Sears if the initialization does not work. If the light stays off for a day I would imagine the system is working and you have a leak. If you re-initialize it after some air leaked out, the light would likely return after more air leaked out.

Could you please explain what exactly was changed and why?

It took a couple days for the light to come on, and from reading related threads some go for days or more before the light comes on.
Also I've determined no leaking as I've manually verified the psi over a period of time.

Interesting, Sears only charged $5/tire for TPMS, I'm assuming they just replaced the old sensor? Aren't new sensors more expensive than this? If that's the case maybe they just need to be re-initialized. I'll try that today and report back.

    Thanks,
    Jeremy

The TPMS system is always looking for a signal from the sensors. If one signal is missing, the light will stay on. If the light goes off for a couple days I would imagine they are all working. $5 sounds more like a service kit, not an actual sensor. There is the possibility one of the sensors was damaged when the work was done? All the initialization does is set the pressure that causes the warning to come on.

Can anyone other than the dealer replace sensors? Thinking Sears isn't going to own up to damaging a sensor, and there's no way for me to verify which one is potentially busted.
    You're right, initialization didn't work.

Yes! Any tire shop nowadays can replace/reprogram the sensors but it comes with a handsome price tag ;) It will still be less than the dealership. If the sensors are just out of sync with the TPMS and need scan-tool intervention, plan on dropping $20-$60 at a tire shop. If any of the sensors are no longer working, plan on $40 per sensor or more, installed. At the dealer for the same service, those prices are easily 20-40% more than a tire shop.

DONT ask me how I know this....

Wow at that rate id be more likely to pull the fuse and manage tire pressure manually!

Doesnt work that way. Pulling the fuse will make the light stay ON.

Then there is the "Click & Clack" solution: Black tape (over the light)!;)

I'll know their response in the morning.
I'll determine exactly what they did and draw conclusions from there. I'll post back here in the hopes this thread helps another noob like myself in the future.
    Thanks!

If Sears is unable (or unwilling) to help, my next step is the dealer as I'm headed there for an alignment and the steering column recall.

Took to Sears this morning and they noticed one sensor is dead. They said the battey life is 5 years, which seems consistent with other cars I've owned with TPMS. That puts these sensors on the threshold of failure (car is '06).
I asked for a quote on all four sensors They quoted $70/ea for a total of $290 installed. That's a lot to remove a light! But I will get it done somewhere. Wanted to at least ask the dealer about it, although their prices are higher I would imagine. Any indy shop is probably the answer.
