We have a 2006 Prius and we just got in an accident and totalled the car. My question is this: if we get a new Prius can we transfer the HOV stickers?

    Help!

In CA the stickers are tied to the registration/car so you would not be able to transfer them to a new one

Good question, since they have to stay with the car, if there is a carpool lane in the junk yard thats where your totaled Prius needs to be. Have you checked with the DMV?... somehow you deserve to get these stickers for your replacement Prius. I also think if you buy a new qualified vehicle you should be able to transfer them as well.. "Free the stickers"!

Although not legal since the stickers are tied to a VIN, what if you requested a set of replacement stickers (against your totalled car's VIN) and then put them on your new car? From a moral standpoint, the totalled car is not going to be in the carpool lane, it's not like you're adding another vehicle to the 85k limitation.

Of course, hopefully, DMV has a way to return a totalled car's sticker into the pool or an ability to re-issue to the replacement car...
