My 2005 Prius has a slow fluid leak from the driver’s side front transmission cover. My dealer says their books do not provide a repair for this and recommend replacement of the hybrid transmission (~$2800). Does anyone have any information on this repair or suggestions for less expensive alternatives?

this is very unusual, has the car been in an accident? How long have you had the car? How many miles on the car?

I bought the car new and put on all of the 186,000 miles. No accidents and no problems. Do you think the cover can be removed and replaced with a new gasket?

welcome! how big a puddle is under it every morning? do you check the level? $2800. is cheap for a new tranny, but you can get a salvage for almost nothing and pay a good mech to install it. no idea if that gasket can be replaced. all the best!(y)

with 180,000 miles, I would not replace just the gasket. The transaxle is worn and the work involved is the same as putting in another one. I would source a good used low mileage transaxle and replace.

With 180,000 miles, I would not replace just the gasket either.

    First?
I would determine the leak rate.
If you're using 1 quart every 180,000 miles, I think I would replace the fluid....USING OEM FLUID.... and not some fancy-scmancy additive.

If your leak rate is extremely low, I think I'd try to leg this out until something more expensive breaks.

    Good Luck!

Leak rate seems to be about a few drops in couple of hours. I can go several weeks between adding.

maybe you can re-torque those bolts and see if that helps. I fixed a valve cover gasket leak on my 3.4 liter 4runner engine, just by tightening all the bolts.

Good point. I had the dealer look at it but I didn't ask if they tried that.

if that doesn't work, loosen up as many as possible and inject some gasket sealant, unless that would warp the cover.
