VERY cool parking assist mod

Had a brief thread on this a while back, but can't find it..

At any rate, if you have a backup camera, this is a device that installs between the rear camera and your head unit (nav). When you backup, it show the picture (as before, but also superimposes the distance to "target". The sensors are mounted into the bumper, and then you wire it... Not a mod for the squeamish - but likely one of the most useful mods available.

When I replaced my stereo, I got these for around $50 (set of 4 sensors, wire, video cable, converter box).

This is called Toyota Parking Assist (TPA) - Great doc too!

Of course, you have to find parking sensors that match your paint - I got silver and they match perfectly...

Well - had another thread, guess now they have merged - here's some more... A pick of the "system" - the link shows the installation. I think the Toyota doc is much better - shows placement, and shows how to remove the bumper for proper fitting...

This plugs between your camera, and Nav. It will give you the distance superimposed on the camera display.

While the link has a stand alone system (with its own display), the picture attached shows a different unit - which plugs inline (clean install).

But the Toyota document looks like it's for Gen 2....

Hrmm - not sure - but I have taken the whole back of my car apart, and this was the genesis for the removal...

I don't see anything in the Parking Assist document (Post #1) that details taking any part of the car apart. It clearly shows a Gen 2 Prius inside and out. Maybe you are thinking about the PDF in your other thread.

You are correct - I uploaded the incorrect doc - but I just changed it in the original post - so it now shows the parking sensors and "how to"...

Yeah it makes more sense now.... It might be useful to know how long it actually took you to install the gizmo.

Keep in mind - there are 3 bugs in the FM radio - it still works, but you have to press an FM button to make it work. Just ebay search pip gps...

Got the nav running in true 800x480 mode today - and the screen is very nice

ebay search pip and gps. Find the device, and scroll down. You'll see it in the bottom of the listing. Remember, you need to match your paint. Ask the seller a question, and I'm sure they'll work something out...

I see a number of parking sensors, but I don't see this particular one (which integrates with Prius nav?) on ebay anywhere.

This is a weird part - for which I could not find in the Internet world. Do an Ebay search for PIP GPS Toyota, and look at the bottom of the description - there you will find the part. You would need to contact that Ebay seller (autodvdgps) - but they have poor communications.

Installed the bumper sensors last night. The whole task took some time, but I’m happy with the outcome. Following the bumper removal doc was straight forward – though there were a few clips under the car that weren’t mentioned in the doc (not sure if I was blurry eyed – and didn’t really need to remove them – but I believe there were like 4 clips not mentioned). I would invest in the nylon pry tool (I made a pry tool with a grinder, and a cheap wire stripper). The bumper pops off, then you place it safe – then there is a Styrofoam backing on the metal. You need to cut out space for the sensors (measuring twice, cutting once). I made a much larger hole in the Styrofoam – and it turned out fine.
At this point, drill the holes (420mm spacing), plug in the sensors, tie wrap the wires, and run them into the car. I did this on the driver side because I had power and the video signal there.

The video signal from the camera plugs into this sensor box, and the sensor goes to the head unit (nav). Running wires up front (to the nav) is easy – pull the plastic trim at the doors, and you have a nice easy place for the cable to run forward.

Unfortunately, I still do not know where the reverse signal is up front (to my head unit), so while I have this monstrosity installed, I can’t see it in action yet…….


It looks very nice - the smudges on the last picture are from the take residue and dirt from my hands... I hate that sticky stuff...

The REV signal to the head unit is a PINK wire, Pin 5 of L42, a gray connector (drawing below) that goes into the back of the NAV. I have no idea what type of signal this is (12V, etc) but hopefully your install documentation knows what level it is.....

You could also put a voltmeter on it - I suspect it might simply be 12V when Reverse is engaged. But no guarantees....I'd verify that if it were me...

Arrg... Mine has no 5 pin connector - anyone else with a reverse clue?

do you have a picture from the touchscreen showing the superimposed picture?

Try looking one more time - you HAVE to have this on your NAV head unit. It provides a Parking brake input (pin 1), the ECU-IGN 12V power (2), the wheel speed sensor signal (3), and the Reverse signal (5) that you need.

It is a gray 5-pin connector, with only 4 wires coming out of it (at least I couldn't find a wire in the schematics that was going to pin 4), in this order:

Red (1) - Black (2) - Violet (3) - empty (4) - Pink (5).

According to the schematics, this HAS to be there. (We are talking about a factory NAV unit, correct?)

No - this is aftermarket - and I guess that wire harness is not on a stock Prius.

I ended up wiring to the reverse lights for the time being... It works - will post pics at some point...

Correct - that harness is only present with factory NAV. Sorry, incorrect assumption on my part...

So who installed your aftermarket? If you have a reverse backup camera functionality, they must have tapped into some kind of reverse line? Can't they tell you which line in the aftermarket NAV it is?

Or did you do it yourself? If so, can you post the installation instructions? That might help figure it out.
