What would be more offensive? To burn the American Flag or to burn the bible?

maybe it is the paucity of facts or the amount of ill-will your ideas or concepts revolve around? The only person playing here is you.

    cute but again not intelligent.

This is my point.. there is a misunderstanding... .this by no stretch of the imagination signals to anybody that the symbol has lost its meaning... only that the symbol is being desecrated and those who do it have no respect for it and therefore not only should not be listened to as having any political reasoning buy should be punished.

This country has gone on too far with the Dr. Spock mentality of spoiling our kids... if they throw a temper tantrum and break or tear something up... "oh my.. the little darlings must be upset!".. so they get what they want..

Burning the flag is no more than a temper tantrum froma disrespectful spoiled brat that has no respect for dignitaries or authorities in their life.

They have never been trained to do anything except what serves them and they are self centered without an understanding for due process of how to sway opinion and influence for good... its all about them in thier tantrum.

Yea, you wouldn't want to offend anybody or make them think they need to so something with thier life.

If you call it fiction, you know a little less than a rock... your life is fiction.. the bible is a testament of truth and the old testament the character and ways of God.

I'm sorry your understanding is so darkened that you cannot see what most of the world can see.

Don't worry about it... he has made on other comments about this subject.
I don't think he read it correctly and is now embarrassed.

sometimes when people don't have anything to say.. in order to not look foolish, they just play games like they do.

dbermanmd, I followed what you said just fine.

    No, your not going crazy!

Do not think there will ever be one against burning the flag - don't the the separation of State from Church would permit one.

I do not think they are equally offensive either. Just my opinion.

My carefully thought-out but equally untestable opinion on the matter is this:
Burn the trolls! Then everything will be less offensive! :p

But if it's the bible and flag-clutching kind of troll, it makes it a little trickier to only burn the bad.

Depends how cold they are. And which one is better looking. Mostly I would vote for wearing the flag. (And if they wore, for example, a Mexican flag on their nice person, would you think them unpatriotic?)

Which would I burn first? I think a big, fat, family bible would give off more heat and be more effective. However one of those super-huge-patriot-buy-from-me flags I see flying over some car dealerships, our centers of patriotism, could heat my home for a month. You could seal off your house for the termite exterminators with one of those babies! I've seen carloads of confused Marines from Pendleton come to a halt, dismount and come to attention before our Ford dealership. It looked to them like the military idea of the rapture was about to begin.

    I disagree.

People who insist that the Bible is the literal and inerrant word of god (because it says it is) have a screw loose. But the book itself is filled with poetry, adventure, porn, action, romance, allegory, and wonderful mythology. It can be a bit dry in places, but it is one of the world's great books.

Agreed. As I have read the Bible tons of times, it is dry in parts.

Having a screw loose is a great way of putting it.

One must read the Bible with the knowledge it was written by man, and therefore, has flaws.

Some flaws. But there are parts, that contain truth.

As it says in The Word:

To you who are ready to dig the truth, I say this: Love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst.
When someone gives you a hassle form the castle, be cool, and respond with the energies of prayer for that person.
If someone slaps you in the face, stand there and take it. If someone grabs your shirt, giftwrap your best coat and make a present of it. Dig this: If someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more tit-for-tat stuff. Live generously. Here is a simple rule of thumb: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them! If you only love the lovable, do you expect a pat on the back? If you only help those who help you, do you expect a medal?
If you only give for what you hope to get out of it, do you think that’s charity?

I tell you, love your enemies. Help and give without expecting a return. You’ll never—I promise—regret it. Live out this God-created identity the way our Father lives toward us, generously and graciously, even when we’re at our worst. Our Father is kind; you be kind. Don’t pick on people, jump on their failures, criticize their faults—unless, of course, you want the same treatment. Don’t condemn those who are down; that hardness can boomerang. Be easy on people; you’ll find life a lot easier. Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back—given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity...

See, not all of the Bible is wrong...

Burning flags creates a lot of smoke with very little heat. Bibles are better, but don't forget to take off the plastic covers or it will stink like hell. Suggestion: phone up the gideon society before it gets cold and ask them to deliver a couple of boxes of their best-burning bibles. This will save money on heating oil.

Really? Care to give us a time and date?

Your disrespect of the marines is noted. You can return your liberty any time you like.

Another "patriot" with a mummified sense of humor.

Yeah, I disrespect the Marines. (Why don't you spell it with a capital letter? No respect!)

I am surrounded by them here and feel wonderful about it. I sometimes pay for random tables of them at restaurants I go to anonymously. I have them in the classes I teach at college. A Marine once told me that I never was a member of a military service: I had only been in the Air Force and Navy! (That's a joke too, since you need to have them pointed out to you.) I love those guys and worry about those who I got to know.

What a stupid remark you made!

Ah, a joke. Sorry I was confused and made you call me names. Or were the insults "jokes" too?

See, in the past, I was always able to recognize jokes because they were funny. You might try to put one of those smiley things on yours just to identify them.

I find them both to be offensive - is there a difference if we do it and we call it freedom of speech or if an "extremist" in another country does it and we consider it an act of war. Where do we call the line? Do we burn library books any more if we think them to be offensive.
    OBTW - I am a 20+ year Navy retiree.

See previous posts by Proco and Alric. They didn't seem to need a roadmap.

There is a lot of excellent humor on this site and most often it goes unremarked upon. We just enjoy it. I feel humbled in that I got standing ovations from these two guys. I think any open mind might have at least noticed I was being satirical.

And further, I see that you are some sort of "Christian Conservative" spokesman, whatever qualifies one to be so. You invite us to look at your blog. (I notice a plethora of your opinions but was unable to find any responses to them. I think you are talking to yourself. "Daily Kos" has nothing to fear here.)

Your quick, hateful, unthinking response to my post might explain why you CCs are held in such general contempt by so many. I should "return my liberty!" That really doesn't mean anything, but I sense what you intended: a quick moral judgement and instant condemnation from one who is so sure of himself that he speaks with the infallibility so mocked by your ilk in Popes. You are hair-triggered to vilify.

What you conserve should be eliminated as soon as possible and what you say has nothing of the Christian in it. There are so many like you that love to orate in the voice of the God of the Old Testament with instant harsh verdicts. So smug in rightiousness! Makes you feel powerful, no? Jesus never spoke in these voices. Over-reaction? I don't think so. I think it is necessary to respond to bigotry whenever it even starts to raise its ugly head.

We on the left have been accused of being voiceless to respond to the hatred of the right. I'm not one of them. (No smiley things here.)

You might try to put one of those little crosses on YOUR posts so we will when know you speak for God himself.

It appears to me that you have not read any of my blog except the headline.

Your charges against me and the personal attacks are unfounded and, more importantly, off-target in my view. My blog is there for people to see what I believe, since I'm a fiscal conservative, socially liberal Christian who holds to an orthodox reformed Christian theology. That's an unusual combination and means I "consider" issues such as gay marriage, abortion, economic justice, etc. with an eye toward modifying my presuppositions that could be culturally based rather than strictly consistent with my philosophy and theology. The distinctions are lost on most people, because those on the right and the left that attack people with cartoon-style characterizations do so without taking even the slightest bit of time taken to try and understand someone different than them.

If I take this most recent "spewing-forth", and re-read your original post that made me question you initially, I would have to withdraw my suggestion to put a smiley face on your non-humorus posts. Perhaps they are not "jokes" at all in the standard sense, but "attacks" that some find funny the same way that bigots enjoy racial jokes.

This last response has, in my view, shown you to be a hardened partisan who is either more interested in hurling insults than engaging in discussion, or a person who simply enjoys tweaking others. Either way, I hope you well in life, even though I know we will not be able to engage in any productive conversation.

Can you clarify what you meant by the phrase "What you conserve should be eliminated as soon as possible ..."? I want to understand that phrase, as it comes very close (in one reading of it) to wishing me harm.
