when you're doing a coolant change for the engine, you don't need to remove the engine block plug

1st, you remove the cock plug
2nd, refill it from the reservoir
3rd, put it into inspection mode.

As for the plug, I don't even know where its at, but that's the procedures they do at the dealer.

From what I know, they only do a drain and refill at the dealership, they don't remove the engine coolant plug, they remove the radiator cock plug and then refill it at the reservoir.

That strange, because that is the requirement when you change the coolant, what happen when we request to do that!!! are they going to lie that they did!!!, it only do this every 100k why don't we do it right from the start??

Where did you read that its a requirement to drain out the coolant from the engine? I know most car's do that, but for the Prius, it didn't say that.

The cylinder block drain plug is on the back side of the engine next to the fire wall. IIRC it is about halfway up the block and a little closer to the passenger tire.

The picture in the manual is not very good but does get you in the general vicinity. The HINT tells you that it is on the back side of the generator (engine).

I removed mine when I changed the coolant, following the repair manual instructions.

I will be glad to the next time I have the engine undercover off but do not know when that will be. I just changed oil and filter this weekend.

You have to access the drain plug from below..

My chilton manual is saying there is a tank to keep the coolant warm when the car is off. I'm thinking that is only on the gen II prius. Is there a tank on the gen III? I also would appreciate a picture of the drain plug. The repair manual and the chilton book are so different. The Chilton is trying to put all the models in one book. Makes it pretty confusing. You get what you pay for I guess. Where can I get the Toyota repair manual?

You are correct, the coolant thermos was Gen 2. For Gen 3 they used the heat exchanger in the exhaust system to speed warm-up.

Try a searching ebay for 2010 factory manuals sometimes you can get one on a CD for $10 or so, or you might find one to download.

Thanks. I'll check it out. Just finished the engine and the inverter change. I found the drain plug. It's a little copper plug 10mm wrench required on the back of the engine all the way over on the passenger side about 6 inches from the bottom of the block. It is recessed into the block a bit an hidden pretty well. It has a tube right under it to put a hose on to direct the coolant. See pic below.[IMG]
