My 2007 gen 2 Prius' battery is almost dead after approx. 140K miles and needs to be replaced (paid $105 to get the diagnosis from a local dealer). The quote from the local dealer was $3400 and I might do the replacement by myself (thanks for all the useful information posted here and on YouTube).

I would like to buy a genuine Toyota OEM HV battery online and was wondering which site is credible (or reliable) to proceed with all those shipping and core credit refund processes. I was also thinking about the re-manufactured one from the companies introduced in this forum, however, I'd rather go with new one from Toyota for next 100K miles.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't believe the online Toyota dealers ship the batteries, you might have to pick up/will call. What city/state are you in? There are plenty of dealers that sell online

Did the $3400 dealer quote include installation ?

Yes, $3400 includes everything including labor, tax, and battery fan filter replacement (I paid $105 already for the diagnosis which is included in that quote)

How much for just the battery, excluding core charges ?

^ just a hunch: they won't sell just the battery. With install that's not out of the ballpark.

    Or consider GreenTec?

I did not specifically ask the price of battery itself w/ or w/o core charge (I did not know about those core charge at the moment). But I remembered that the price of the battery that they were saying was roughly $2500.

You can buy the battery at your local dealer's parts counter. They will charge you a core charge of $1350 upfront, but that's refundable when you return your core.

In fact, one of the thread I found here had a link to the Toyota OEM HV battery with a free shipping.

2007 Toyota Prius Parts - AutoNation Toyota Gulf Freeway Parts

But I do not know about their reputation or so. I think I heard about GreenTec in another thread.

Steve Woodruff is in Indiana. I am not a fan of remanufactured batteries, but Steve is about the best one can hope for if that route is chosen.

I did not think about buying one from the local dealer and might ask them directly. The one thing that I wanted to buy the battery from online was because of no sales tax.

Greentec auto is a refurbisher, if you are looking for a new battery, I would not choose them.

That is ballpark IIRC. Online will have shipping costs and the risk of damage in transit.

Do keep in mind that a DIY install requires you to put in your old battery's ECU. I don't think it is a big deal, just something to be aware of.

That is a dealership; their reputation is fine.
Add in your cost and hassle in shipping the core back to them. For people local to them that would be a very nice deal. Perhaps someone local to you would match the price ?

Greentec has a couple of new cell offerings for 2nd gen. One with OEM capacity, one with +30%. And one with refurb/new cells. With all the case is recycle. And the OP said he was entertaining third party.

I'm not affiliated with them. Was on the cusp of doing a swap using one of their mobile installers (for a Civic hybrid). Then Honda came through so we called it off. There is a member here who just did a swap with one of their refurb'd units, did his own install and shipping.

Not to bad mouth Greentec but another member purchased a "new cells" battery from them 4 months ago with a 4 year warranty. The battery seems to be failing with 3 bad modules after 4 months. I would suspect the product Greentec is selling as "new cells" is in fact not new cells......

That, or the new cells were not balanced with the old ones.
In any case, the 'new cells' option is $2300.

Just my opinion, but if I was OP I would really only consider 3 options:
    • Remanufactured through Steve Woodruff
    • A complete module replacement from a low mileage, recently salvaged G3 Prius battery. This is the best and cheapest option for a knowledgeable DIY'er.
    • A new battery
