    Steering Wheel

Several members suggested the website above since it is in the US and priced lower than ordered from Japan. Yes there are a few local custom shops but they require you to send in the core so the car can't be driven for about 2 weeks. I bought a core for that but it didn't work out because the price was too high and they can not guarantee the look I want (no sample pictures either) and no return policy. Ebay turned out mixed bags with prices ranging from a few hundred dollar for the basic ones up to over a thousand plus another $100 for shipping.
Nigel ordered them, I believe at least 5 per style to get the price break and now he has plenty in stock.

    Out come the stock one.

In go the new one. Some call this silver carbon.

You have to remove the battery connector so that the air bag is disable but do NOT close the trunk because with no power, it can't be open from the outside!
The new one is much heavier than the custom one. The craftsman gave a nice touch by tying a piece of the leather used to wrap this wheel. I really like the feel of the smooth carbon finish and the soft leather section so much so that I do enjoy the driving much more now. Note that there is also a carbon vinyl version which is about half the price of the real carbon. There are 2 versions: standard and sport and mine is the sport one.

Nice! I do prefer a piano black finish with the Sport design. That's my "desired" Prius steering wheel.

Note that the hatch can be opened from the inside if the battery is disconnected.

Yes, with climbing over the rear seat into the trunk and removing the panel and etc. which I'd rather not do. THX.
