Just installed JVC NAV/DVD Head Unit and backup camera

I thought about getting one of those OEM look radios from China off eBay but I bought this top of the line JVC with navigation real-time traffic Bluetooth DVD player remote and detachable face. The navigation is fantastic and the sound is real good with the factory speakers. I added a bazooka tube for bass and a backup camera in the factory location. All the parts cost me about $1200.00 and I am very happy. When I play a movie in the prius it sounds like very good home theatre system. All of my steering wheel controls work also.

I got trim piece off eBay from a Toyota dealer in England. They do sell this part here in the USA. The trim piece leaves a little gap on each side of the radio so I filled it in with this part Metra 95-8202 Toyota Double Din Radio Kit and it and it fills in the gaps and looks factory installed.

It is the pioneer ND-BC2 and it has a very good image in day or night and it handles the sunlight directly to. The angle is adjustable so if you want to see more of the rear bumper you can do this to. I like this camera so much I am going to install another on the front bumper inside the lower grill so I can see the the bumper stops and edge of curbs when parking as the prius is low like my mini and BMW and I do not want to damage the front of my prius.

Looks good. Do you feel the FM reception better than OEM tuner?
The FM radio is probably the only one complain I have till today. I plan to install 2DIN unit - my favorit is CASKA unit (not yet on market) or China off the eBay if rrolf will succeed his issues with it.

Yes, the FM is better than the OEM tuner. I also have the HD radio installed to and that really good. I cannot understand how Toyota could drop the ball on the factory radio.

I could not find anyone in USA selling this part I bought it from here.TOYOTA PRIUS RADIO SURROUND 55405-47080 on eBay (end time 20-Nov-09 10:38:47 GMT) The part is a little expensive but it is good quality part and matches the rest of the car. I got a aftermarket dash kit for my honda element and that part looked very cheap on the car I was never happy with it. The interior on the prius is very nice and this factory toyota part works very well and looks good.

My Alpine W505 double din unit is sitting on my office desk for the last three weeks. I am in the same boat with you, replacing factory radio unit with quality aftermarket double din head unit.

I have been waiting patiently for aftermarket surroundings for double din unit and according to my audio shop, it will be ready by end of this month. I do not know whether it is from Metra or Scosche but one of those two, I guess.

I thought about your route but I decided to wait until aftermarket dash kit is available and check the quality of them. If it is poor quality like your Honda one, I will follow your route.

Are you satisfied with the look of fill in part from Metra? That was my main concern going with Toyota surroundings from UK. It seems like it is for Toyota head unit which is little bit wider than aftermarket head units. I prefer perfect hole size for the head unit.

    Happy motoring!

Yes, I am very satisfied with the results of the Metra. I think looks perfect and metra pieces are thick plastic and very solid. I am very happy.

Thanks, I am sold! I just placed couple of ebay orders, one to UK for surrounding kit and the other for Merta fill in kit.
I plan to do whole speaker replacement and sub installation with this as soon as the kit arrives from UK. Can't wait anymore:)

Can anyone confirm any of the eBay HU's being Toyota spec'd (wider than the standard double din)? I'd like to avoid the fill-ins as well

If you 're talking about the surround plastic, the Ebay one is 200mm x 100mm. There are HUs with that dimenssion - but not normal ones. All standard 2 din HUs are 180 x 100. So you need both the Ebay surround, and the Metra kit.

Re: Just installed JVC NAV/DVD Head Unit and backup camera

So how do you like the unit . .I assume it is the KW-NX7000BT.
how well does it integrate with the Prius's controls? both phone and sound??

How is the GPS? fast? easy to use etc . . .the web site is . . rather sparse on real useful information.

I am really looking into adding one of these and any info or notes/help would be great . . . (like more explanation on the mounting .. it has been a long time since I replaced a unit and even then the kit was easy to find and install.)

    Thanks

I was looking into the Kenwood 9140 also but it won't let you connect satellite and HD at the same time, beware if you want both.

Re: Just installed JVC NAV/DVD Head Unit and backup camera

That is good to know as I was going to install the Kenwood 9140 but I also found the kenwood boots up very slowly and if you use a backup camera with this unit you can just forget it as because slow boot up the camera will come on after you have backed up.

I found out all of the Kenwoods do this and that is a real shame.

Re: Just installed JVC NAV/DVD Head Unit and backup camera

Another excellent point I have run into. The Pioneer's also take about 30 seconds to boot up and you have to wait for the backup camera. With rear visibility what it is that camera is a necessity. One installer recommended the Alpine's which boot quickly but I've read the NAV is not so good.

If anyone has any good HU recommendations please post. Are JVC and Clarion any good? I've looked at Kenwood, Pioneer and Alpine.
