Hey all. I found my rattle!!! It's actually my SunPass for the electronic tolls. One of the suction cups comes loose and allows the transponder to tap on my windshield at times. Has anyone checked theirs???

I guess we have to look at the "rattling" issue in perspective. Sure we have posters on the board complaining immensely about them. But you have to look at the total number of units sold, and get the complaint total to see how big of an issue this is.

No different than the "Car Accelerating forward coming to stop".

I had that happen but it was merely the ABS kicking in. I am used to it, others may not be??

I don't think a defect exists IMO. I am glad we all bring these subjects up, and although the rattling issue seems to affect many posters, mine was self created by items I placed somewhere and never remembered them...(Sunglasses was one of them). I don't wear them often, but they were in the overhead and rattling...

Let's hope if this is a major issue that with our calls to Toyota, and constantly raising the issue will make them address it in some way...

I haven't had any major dash rattling, but I have this really annoying high frequency clicking coming from underneath the steering column. It seems to be coming from an open area and when I reach in and press it sometimes goes away briefly. I'm hoping the dealer will be able to isolate this and fix it. I've pushed on different parts of this area and sometimes it goes away and sometimes it doesn't. It sounds like the same frequency as the click when the brakes are engaged.

I voted No, but was reluctant to do so because I'm afraid of jinxing myself and will start hearing rattles now. Maybe other people have a similar superstition and it could be one reason why there are so few No votes. I have a hard time believing that 75% of brand new Priuses have rattles.

One reason could be the hard surfaces inside the glove box and other storage compartments (unliked the lined glovebox of the Gen II). I put non-slip shelf liner in there to stop stuff from sliding around.

I would say 75% is a very significant number. While this poll does not encompasses the entire Prius owners population it may actually carry a fair representation given this is a pretty big Prius community. I suspect rattles will be the number 1 negative issue in future consumer reports and reviews for the new Prius. We'll see...

I tried some white teflon lubricant that I use on fittings for my boat with complete success. A light coating applied to the metal U shaped latch seemed to be all that was needed to eliminate the noise.

    Front Seat Squeak Noise TSB

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but there is a TSB titled "Front Seat Squeak noise" T-SB-0288-08. It covers 2004 through 2010 Prius and various other Toyota vehicles. Apparently the two (two on each seat) front seat locater pins can rub against the holes the fit into. The TSB calls for removing the front seats and cutting off part of the pins.

Probably not a job you would want to do yourself because of the air bags. The TSB was is dated 9/8/2008 but has been updated to include 2009 and 2010 vehicles as well.

Just back from the dealer. The rattle in the back was the passenger side latch. They supposedly adjusted it and there is no rattle right now. I had unlatched/relatched several times without any success before. Maybe they just added some Teflon white grease, or they really adjusted it...

Also got the headlight delay removed... CAD$65.00 +tax for the programming (.6 hour). Does it really take that long to hook-up the cable and change one value on screen?

I'm told it should take less than 5 min and that includes the time it takes to locate the lap top and cable.

Well then the programing came to Cad$780/hour (plus tax of course!). :(

I would buy the $500 cable but there is not much else I need to change, according to the list of adjustable items in the owner's manual. I am wondering if there is a more complete list somewhere?

Perhaps I would spring for the cable if there were more items I could program myself... My daughter also has a 2010 Prius, so I could program some stuff for her as well.

I surely don't doubt you IndyKing...just would like to hear what others are hearing so I can help to possibly suggest some ways to correct?? I know how frustrating they can be. I hate them in "any" car. But let's hope that one TSB may have some affect with the seats....(hoping)

I'd definitely like to hear about TSBs...wish they were more public. I have noises coming from several sources. One is the rear passanger seat, so maybe I'll try some teflon grease...is that just liquid teflon in a bottle? Do you put it on the metal parts of the latch? Can I just fill the entire interior of my car with this stuff? haha...seriously, I have rattles from the dash, mid console, doors, rear seats, etc. Its f'ing annoying...

And for reference, my previous cars have been a Mazda B-2200 pickup with 200k miles on it and an Isuzu Rodeo with 160k miles on it. Both crappy cars, but neither had anywhere near this much rattle after all those miles and my Prius only has 3k....

Every time I turn my car off, I hear a rattleing or gurggling sound. Is this normal? I thought that it would be as I just got it as a certified used car.

    PriusRos,

note that we have no proof that all those who voted on this poll are actually Prius owners...

They might have wrapped some teflon tape around the part the latch connects to, to eliminate any play between the parts--I had this done on a previous car to address a similar noise.

I have the creaking in the passenger side of the rear seat. Removed the trunk cover--didn't help. Folded passenger side of seat down--noise went away.

I have an appointment this week for the 5K mile service ($69.88 + $16 up-charge for synthetic oil), and will have them look at it then. I'll mention the latch to them--thanks for posting.

Our Gen II has had dash rattles almost from day one. The dealer fixed it under warranty the first time around, but they eventually came back. I suspect the dash mounting system loosens up over time.

I didn't vote since this is a Gen III thread, but I wanted the new owners to realize that this isn't a new problem.

Don't buy a 2010 Prius. Find another car, seriously it's not worth the aggravation.

I have a rattling noise under the dash/passenger side when the car is accelerating. Of course the sound could not be duplicated when brought to the dealer. I am going to share these emails with the service manager.
