Free USB For Early Nav Customers?

    I read this online today and thought I'd pass it along and ask, "IS THIS TRUE"?

    ".... Coleman told Priuschat that USB integration will only be availalbe with the Navigation package that can be added to the upper level Prius trim levels: III, IV and V. The good news is that early Prius buyers can get the USB functionality added at the dealership (for a fee, of course). The bad news: the $1,800 nav package will cost more when USB is added......"

    So, I have an early Prius with Nav (pkg IV). Can I then get the USB upgrade for free?

    this statement seems to indicate that it will not be free. would be great if they gave us the hardware free and let us do the install, or have the option of paying a dealer

    As noted many times in these forums, and as I will continue to point out until Toyota comes to their senses and offers a software fix (if this is indeed possible), the Factory USB interface is basically useless. I waited till they were standard w/ nav to purchase my IV (and paid for the "privilege") and haven't used it since the first week because its operating system is so ridiculously lame. For now, you're much better off using BT or Aux for IPOD use.

    It is strange how carmakers "invent the wheel" again and again. Why they do not integrate standard, advanced, cheap NAV software like iGo, TT and DVD, MP3, DivX technologies? If the cellular phone can do it for few bucks why not the head unit and without paying high surplus.

    I agree with what you are saying...but then in defense of car makers they tend to offer warranties that are at least 3 years or more and their products have to hold up under hot car temps, vibration, etc. While most CE devices have 90 day or 1 year warranties and that's it.

    My iPod Touch works great with Bluetooth and the playlist I created. Granted not as easy as scrolling on a Nav Screen, but unless I was on a long trip I'm thinking I can figure out what 5 to 10 songs I want to listen to.

    I agree with you.

    And it should also be understood that Toyota is a car manufacturer and does not make the head units. Toyota and we are therefore slaves to what is available from its suppliers. A supplier must be able to manufacture the electonics in quantity, at a reasonable cost, and warrant them to Toyota for at least 3 years. With that in mind, if anyone knows of a better supplier of head units they should let Toyota know. Until then, we have what we have.

    They invent their wheel to hack proof its product to make a profit. Putting iGo, TT and others is a no go for car manufactures.
