I had the same sound and thought it was the air vents. Turns out I opened my lower glove compartment and it went away. Try it. I put a piece of paper towel over each latch and closed the glove box. no more rattle.:D

Couple of things I discovered... the lower glove box door does not fit snugly when closed. I put rubber bumpers on the dash part where the two rubber bumpers on the glove box door meet the dash to make the door more snug. The rubber bumpers on the door does not quite meet with the dash so it rattles when you hit a bump....

secondly, there is a little tray in the center console when you slide the console lid back. The tray fits very loosely and rattles whenever you hit a bump. You can either take out the tray or line the bottom lip with felt where the tray rests in the console. There is a groove on each side where it rests on, that's where you line the felt. those two fixes got rid of most of my rattles.

My Prius started developing the annoying rattles a few weeks ago (just as it cooled here in VA). I don't even have 3000 miles on it yet. It seems very consistent with other peoples complains. My 2006 never had this issue.

Based upon the above threads and suggestions see if any of them are related to your's.

I found several places that Toyota just needed to use a better Bumper/Stop and that took care of them in 30 minutes...the only one I can't 100% stop is the floating console but since I learned to lay my hand on it a lot, it's nothing much at all anymore...

    ;)

On my Ford Taurus, I put pieces of paper between the glove box and the body. With enough sheets, the rattle stopped. I still remember that car - that's why I am getting a Prius.

What I found is that those darn small rubber stops on corners are sometimes to small and they allow for some play. So replacing them with larger ones has helped most anything I have heard. The "floating console" rattle seems to be caused by the front cupholder cover....I am going to try a few things with that and see if that helps...

Or it could truly be the floating console itself, but it's not bad, I rest my hand on it and it stops.....I do that on a bumpy road....

Problem is they need to fix the roads then our cars would last longer and run quieter and no more rattles! :)

Month old Prius, silver, 1000 miles. I believe I have isolated the rattles (on mine anyway) to the front right side speaker grille vibrating against the pillar garnish and that little garnish in front of the little window. If you kinda fondle those pieces, they move against each other and rattle. BUT, I can't figure out how to get them off to pad with foam. Any one out there know how?
My former Scion xB, was easy to figure out how everything came apart for rattle control. I even have plastic trim tools, and can't get them to budge.

Same problem that occurs with many owners JACoH, including me but the prob is that they ar fitted so tight and you can't do anything about it...Think we just have to wait until somebody posts a solution from a dealer...Verry sad to hear that this problem is so wide spread...TOYOTA shame on you !

Maybe some chrome screws strategically located where everything meets together?
    Thanks

:eek:I've had my 2010 Prius since late August. As the temperature has dropped I have noted some creaking and moaning from the center console area. After the cabin warms up (5 minutes of driving) all is realtively quiet. Here in Massachusetts It's been down to around 30 degrees when I head to work. My Prius is not garaged.

I tend to believe what some of the other posts say about the lack of insulating material between sections of the dashboard. It bothers me a little bit, but it's still better than the 14 year old Corolla wagon that I traded in.

Following-up on a previous post and having experienced the dreaded rattling, three trips to the dealer seems to have fixed it. I had my doubts and had anticipated the dealer identifying the problem as a "loose nut behind the wheel."

The dealer identified the rattle as coming from the center console assembly. They replaced it and the problem seems to be resolved.

Here is the Toyota Part# 58901-47090-E2 Box Sub-Assy, Consol

They also acknowledged a slight noise from the dash area but deemed it normal do to all the plastic and that it gets worse when cold.

So you are saying they changed the entire middle center console and now no more noise at all? (Other than the other minor noise from somewhere else?)

There seems to be an improvement in the rattling that originated from the center console; however, dash noises are still apparent to me.

Does this mean there is hope? I have been sticking little pieces of felt and foam rubber all around and have actually fixed some rattles. But every time I start to think I'm making progress a new one pops up. :)

OMG.....haven't been on here for a few months, and seems like all of my issues are now surfacing on Priuschat. Got my Gen.III on July 4 weekend....so it's now nearly 5 months old. For the past two months my right side dash and passenger door have been making gawd awful noises. I had to take the care in a month ago to have the driver's seat adjuster lever replaced (it broke off when I was adjusting it....turns out it was held on by only 1 screw that isn't very strong), and when there (they kept it for 5 days) I asked them to check the door, etc. They told me that the passenger seat wasn't latched correctly and said it shouldn't rattle any more. Well, it does....and is driving me absolutely mad. I have a Prius V and it cost nearly $35K.....I am so livid that a car that's this expensive would seem so cheap.

I traded a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid (3 years old) for a new Prius, for the better gas mileage. I loved the Camry Hybrid, very well made and sturdy....not many noises after 3 years. Wish I hadn't traded as so far the Prius doesn't seem worth the price.

Another follow-up on my rattle saga: the dealer replaced the center console (see my previous post) and there was some improvement in the rattle from that area. They also said a rattle from the glove area was normal to due to all the plastic and cold weather.

Not satisfied with this response, I contacted the Toyota claim person I had been dealing with. I asked him if the dealer's response to my rattle complaint from the dash was valid. He told me that if the Certified Toyota Technician concluded that the rattle from the glove box area was within specifications for the vehicle, i.e. rattle normal in cold weather, then it would not be considered a warranty issue.

I don’t accept this conclusion. Currently, my Prius is at my audio shop for a stereo install. I have asked them to trace and fix the rattle.

Here still many rattles unsolved :-/

I was on the freeway last night in cold (for LA weather) 48F -- and when I went over the bots-dots I got the center rattle. It seems to be coming more from the cup-holder area -- just to the front of the center console. If I banged the underside with my hand it would make it do it. Then I found if I pushed down inside the cup holder it would mostly go away.

So clearly there is something loose in there........

I have minor glove box rattle too.

I stopped by Toyota and talked to the service manager. He said they haven't had any complaints of rattles..... And Toyota of Hollywood sells BOATLOADS of Priuses. You see so many Gen III cars on the roads in LA.

So I will take it in and see what they can do --- but it's pretty disappointing. It think if we all call Toyota in Torrance and complain maybe they will investigate this?

The new Corolla interior is just as plastic as the Prius but it doesn't rattle ...
