The Insight is price challeneged. It is simply to expensive for what it is. IMO the price should have come in about $2,000 less than current.

Usually, automakers do not admit their pricing mistake.
Instead, they will hold the price for next new model and throw in more standard
equipments. For now, some rebates (Honda rarely gives out big rebate unlike Toyota and others)
    would help a bit.
You can be sure, though, Honda is making more money per Insight than Toyota does per Prius.
Toyota cares more about market share, while Honda about technology, then profit.
Unfortunately, Honda did not see "hybrids" as one of their focus. Now they do (thanks to new CEO).
The next hybrid tech from Honda should be interesting...

Yes, for what it is, Insight is too expensive compared with comparably equipped Prius.

This is an old post, but what I've noticed at least locally is huge dealer mark up on the Insight. So aside from negative or positive reviews about the product, I'm seeing Insight as being as expensive or more expensive than Prius II's or III's.

I posted about an Insight that was advertised at the Honda dealership as being "on sale" with a $4000 mark up. It was the "luxury model" with the Navigation BUT it still was being advertised at 28,000 dollars.

If dealers are going to try and do this with the Insight, it kills Honda's attempt at making it the Hybrid for everyone.

I leave it to individuals to compare products, but if I'm going to spend $28000 on either a Prius or an Insight, even if that Prius might be without a navigation package, I'm still going with the Prius...and the choice isn't even close.

I agree with everyone. To make a real shift in expectations of price with a hybrid and offer it to a larger audience the price has to be lower. Otherwise, it's the same market that already exists. It becomes the Hybrid for The Same Old Crowd.

I think there is a market for younger buyers that would like a new hybrid option that could really be obtainable for >$22,000 or $20,000 dollars. But if Honda can only produce at a cost close to the top of that range, PLUS dealers are going to tack on an additional 2-4 Thousand dollars, then it's game over for the Insight based on a price difference.

I doubt that. With the low volume they (Honda) are likely getting killed on unit cost.

You can get more volume with better pricing.

Honda Canada was looking at $19k-$25k. I knew realistically that $19k was out of the question. I was hoping for $21-$22k. Base price? $23,900 or about a grand less than a loaded Civic EX-L. EX price? Cdn$27,500 or the same price as a base Prius and $150 more than the Civic Hybrid.
