While not as blatantly subsidized as it is in China, we in the USA do not pay the true cost.
Oil companies recieve billions in tax breaks each year.
We also are running out of cheap oil which, at some point, will either require more subsidies or the price will begin to rise.
In addition the polution to the local area around refineries has a very serious impact on locals. In some areas it simply isn't taken care of. In their defense though, we don't understand some of the long term health issues with local exposure to refineries. Those of coal are becomming more and more clear, although that has no affect on this particular topic.

That argument is invalid nearly every business in the US recieves a tax break of some kind.

In fact up until recently here hybrid owners got a very significant tax break.

    ICE vehicle owners do not

I don't think it is invalid.
My business received no subsidies. We were able to take some tax deductions (depreciation, etc) but nothing close to the level the oil companies received.
Personally I would like to see the government give NO company tax breaks, let the free market dictate prices. But that is yet another thread I suspect;)

There was/is a very limited supply of tax breaks for each brand. Toyotas are so popular that their supply expired very quickly. Honda credits are gone too.

Ford hybrid buyers need to hurry up, as its phasing-out credit -- now a measly 25% of the original amount -- will expire March 31.

Thanks to their wonderful product offerings , it isn't clear that the GM and Chrysler credits will ever expire.

    YES YES YES!

I've heard plenty of folks here and in other forums who want the diesel hybrids!

    Where are they?

I really don't care if some yahoo who is never going to use their big a$$ truck to work has a undying loyalty to the gas folks.

Basically the car folks were having a hard time selling their big clunkers so then gas mysteriously went down in price. Thing is the American public is still really cautious about future gas pricing and have not responded as the big players (Ford and Chevy) would have liked. A few went out and said let's go big but the Prius, Scion and other smaller cars are staying popular.

The "little guy" is always getting screwed in America by the corporate entities. My Prius lets me have some control while enjoying fun driving.

Just learn to drive your big truck in ONE lane, park in ONE space and know your braking distance (empty bed or full).

It seems that we are drifting from the philosophical core issues here - free will. We are free to acquire private property. I chose a truck, you a Prius. We both must deal with the consequences, thereof. Good or bad.

We are all responsible for our own safety. Not the government, police, neighbors or anyone else. Large trucks have been around for over 80 years. You knew of the existence of said vehicles prior to your purchase. Safety is part of the calculus you employ when deciding on a vehicle. Knowing such, you made your choice.

I am not responsible for your choice. I am not responsible for your safety.

With free will comes resposibility, if YOU make a choice, YOU are resposible for that choice.

You may resent folks showing you what you are responsible for. You have the free will to deny the truth and scoff at those showing you the bad choices that led to soccer moms in Hummers at the mall.

If you beleive there are no subsidies, how do you explain semi trucks moving freight when trains are so much more fuel effienient? Hint the government is not biulding train tracks in the US, just freeways.

unholy1, no one is proposing we eliminate free will.
What people are saying, is that youi should man-up and pay for the consequences yourself, rather than endangering others, or depending upon the government to lower your costs.
The government is shielding oversized unnecessary vehicle owners from the consequences. The government should just get out of the way and let the free market work (on both sides).

Jimbo thats simple. Its not fiscally responsible to move everything by train. Things that have to move long distances sure. Thats great.

As to your statement that railroads arent government subsidised you may want to do some research. They are and were as heavily subsidized as the interstate system is.

As to the statement in bold. That applies to you as well. You cannot deny that you are just as responsible for your choice to purchase a vehicle that you are more likely to get injured in an accident.:D

oh Jeebus. Do all you mosnter truck people think our military is in the ME to study sand or to enlighten arabs and teach them to vote?
Do you not understand that we are there to ensure access to oil? How is this not a "subsidy" for gas? Our oil heavy lifestyles necessitate our involvement over there. Do we need a military to set up renewable energy infrastructure?

Many of our country's problems stem directly from this Conservative paradox: Conservatives tend to hate the Islamic world, yet they love their primary export product. Well unfortunately, you can't have it both ways. Either you have to respect the Islamic world and buy their oil, or we have to seriously cut back on our usage of it and our military protection of access to it.

That's (supposedly) the first post of mine you've ever read. And that's NOT a monster truck, that's a work truck. Provided you actually have recurring use of it in that capacity, I'm all for it. What I was disagreeing with is your assertion that we don't subsidize gas in America. That's utter BS. We throw trillions at maintaining supply so that you can fill up affordably. Then you complain about deficits. Can't give healthcare to the poor... we spent all our kid's money in Iraq!

There's a reason gas is more expensive in nearly every other country.

You are correct that reason is taxation.

Oh and as to why I have posted the pic of my truck. It is infact about 4 inches taller than stock and has 3 inch taller tires than it came with stock.
I have been harassed by a few prius owners while fueling up. One of them was even nice enough to write gas guzzling POS on my tailgate in permanent marker about a year ago.

I know all Prius owners arent like that. But those that do that crap and portray the prius and small cars are the only thing that should be allowed on the road are the ones that give you guys a bad name

Yeah, that's a 2 way street isn't it? There's plenty of dickhead truck drivers too, aren't there?

The question still remains... If your panties are in a bunch about what some dickhead Prius owner did to you (and they surely were deserving of that name), then why are you here at a PRIUS chat room trolling for a fight?

It makes no sense for you to be here EXCEPT to behave in the same biased way that you complain about above.

The thread here with several prius owners saying our trucks should be banned from the road is the reason we showed up. That and we discovered some other things that are incorrect as well. As soon as we point them out the threads are closed and we are banned.

That is why we keep coming back. To correct misinformation here nothing more:D

while i'm reading through here i'm noticing one thing

everybody is bitching about the cars....

"Guns kill people!" it's the same argument

"Monster trucks kill people!" in both cases it's not the item in question, it's the person in control of the item.

i'm only 17 but even i know it call comes down to the jackass in charge. my first car was a 1980 Buick Regal and now i drive a 1999 Ford F-150, they both get the same gas millage and the buick was smaller. my chances in either one of the vehicles of surviving a crash is a lot higher then driving my mom's focus, my sister's accord, or one of your prius.
