I bought the Garmin 5000 on Amazon.com. The camera was ordered by the shop. It took around 4 hours for the installation and it works perfectly. The power source is hard wired, so I don't have to deal with the cigarette adaptor. Additionally, the backup camera is wired to only work when you backup. Please feel free to ask additional questions.

Looks really nice and a good idea. My only concern is a "smash and grab" .... (I am not concerned about "rub and tugs" though!)

Interesting. I'd like to have a "forward camera" installed below my grille somewhere so I can see where things like wheel stops and curbs are- does anyone know if such an animal exists and could be made to work with the CURRENT Nav Screen???

I agree - and am thinking about it... Problem is switching video sources - though there are many video switches around (and also running remote). Problem is I don't want yet another remote (Head unit and DTV are enough)...

wouldn't mind if somebody made a unit with an additional video input to allow for a split screen to allow just that.

    Dude, love the install...

Is it possible to upload higher resolution pictures. The pop up pics are so small.

    Thanks,
    RoRo

There are many OEM'd cameras on Ebay - they will be as good as the Sony. To a search on camera camry... You can spend between $45 and $250 for pretty much the same thing...

My wife and I bought a 2010 Prius III last October. After each of us backed into objects due to the poor rear vision, we had our local Toyota dealer install an aftermarket rear view camera. We chose a system where the display is in an auto-dimming mirror. We are very pleased with the results and now almost seek out challenging backing up situations.

After several false starts, our Toyota dealer installed a system purchased from Mito Corporation . We got the Auto-dimming mirror with rear camera display and a 180 degree camera that looks just like the #VN2218 Vehicle Rearvision Visual System shown on the Mito web site. The camera mounts just to the right of the rear hatch sensor and looks very much like original equipment.

If you go this route, assemble the system on your living room floor before doing any work to your car. You need to be sure the correct wires and connectors are supplied. We had a few problems that way, and it caused quite a bit of delay in the installation process.

Since the parts from Mito didn’t come with a wire cover to hide the wire as it comes from the head liner to the back of the mirror, we bought a Gentex Rear View Adjustable Mirror Wire Cover.

As I said, we are very pleased with the results. The installation looks like it was done at the factory, and we now have excellent rear vision when backing up. It was more expensive than others mentioned here, but I think it will turn out to be worth the cost.

How much was this backup camera system? Including the system and installation?

Did you just go to the dealer and ask if they can install it and they said yes?

    Thanks,
    Michael K.
