    Efficiency Drives 2010 Ward’s Best Engines Choices

    Toyota Motor Corp.’s all-new Prius HEV earns its place on the list for the third time. The first honors came when the Prius was significantly improved, in 2001 and 2004.

    This hot-selling third-generation Prius carries on Toyota’s patented Hybrid Synergy Drive system, which works in tandem with a 1.8L Atkinson-cycle I-4 for an Environmental Protection Agency fuel-economy rating of 51/48 mpg (4.6-4.9 L/100 km) in city/highway driving.

    Some Ward’s editors did better than that and appreciate the ability to switch driving modes for varying levels of fuel economy.

    Winners (listed alphabetically):

    * Audi AG: 2.0L TFSI Turbocharged DOHC I-4 (Audi A4)
    * Audi AG: 3.0L TFSI Supercharged DOHC V-6 (Audi S4)
    * BMW AG: 3.0L DOHC I-6 Turbodiesel (BMW 335d)
    * Ford Motor Co.: 2.5L DOHC I-4 Hybrid (Ford Fusion Hybrid)
    * Ford Motor Co.: 3.5L EcoBoost Turbocharged DOHC V-6 (Ford Taurus SHO)
    * General Motors Corp.: 2.4L Ecotec DOHC I-4 (Chevrolet Equinox)
    * Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd.: 4.6L Tau DOHC V-8 (Hyundai Genesis)
    * Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.: 2.5L Turbocharged DOHC H-4 (Subaru Legacy 2.5GT)
    * Toyota Motor Corp.: 1.8L DOHC I-4 Hybrid (Toyota Prius)

    The VQ was unseated last year already. The 3.7L just isn't as smooth in the high range as the 3.5L anymore.

    Chevrolet Equinox?

    I can't remember ... is/was that a hybrid? Wasn't one of their hybrids canceled? (maybe I'm thinking of the malibu hybrid, or the Saturn Vue hybrid) It's hard to keep track of which products are kept, and which ones are being put in the grave.

    Equinox isn't a hybrid.

    A whole bunch of their hybrids are dead like the Malibu hybrid. Since Saturn's going away, Aura and Vue Hybrids are dead too. They were supposed to do a two-mode Vue Hybrid but that never went beyond pre-production units.
