Toyota "oem" HU's....

I don't want to high jack your thread, but I wanted to add one item to your checklist, because I'm curious to know, from people who have been research this ebay HUs, if any of them have this feature. Specifically, I'd like to know if any of them support flac playback through flash card etc. That's be kind of like my holy grail, so I was wondering if there was any support for flac out there with these head units.

 

A good checklist and good idea.

1. Nav that is upgradeable - nice to have - ability to run 2gig+ SD cards
2. Steering controls for CAN bus (Eonon last I looked does not support this) - programmable for Toyota.
3. Bluetooth (verify mic location - and ability to run external mic)
4. CD/DVD playback - ability to run NAV *while* doing other things.
5. Ipod support - most support basic Ipod video etc - but iPhone 3G is not supported depending on OS (I believe this is true also for Toyota).
6. 200mm x 100mm size - I think some mention 200 x 105 - which should fit.
7. WinCE 5.0 (6.0 for Garmin maps) with 128MB SDRAM (rare) - you need 128MB for text to voice - a nice thing but definitely not a show stopper
8. Backup cam support - how long until backup video starts from when the car starts? 3 secs is pretty standard - 45 secs is useless...
9. Extra SD slot for music (nice to have 4gig+ ability - I think this is standard on WinCE 5.0)
10. USB support (again - nice to have).
11 Dual zone (in case you ever want to add video to headrests etc)
12 Aux input (games, DTV etc)
13 Screen resolution (480x800 is nice - 240x400 is fine though)
14,15,16,17,18 Support, Support, Support, Support, Support

My HU is still in China getting a software update for bugs in the radio interface... Many have forums for discussing install and issues - a huge +++

 

Hate to butt in but I bought one of these GEMS From China and it screams with everything you would need to support every possible interface on the planet. These all have a great list of options but my experience with the one I bought was and still is (BTW I Put it in my 03 Mustang) a adventure to say the least. and it is not a simple task to populate this with the front end software and all the map data.The interface for Bluetooth,Ipod,CD,s,GPS and FM/AM is cumbersom and not user friendly (About the same as the instructions) One good thig is the DVD player looks great. Well its like they say "'Ya get What Ya pay For" I paid $300 plus free shipping from China. Finally bought the JVC NX7000 and am more than pleased. Good luck on your search

Agree there are many threads of people who have issues, and people who are happy. I had SW bugs (which may have been fixed - it's on its way back from China).

As for the interface - it seems you bought an early model. The current generic interfaces I've seen are *simple*, and tied to the steering command buttons.

Likewise the GPS - in fact, this would be a reason *to buy* one of these. The SW available is far superior to Toyota's, and maps are updated quarterly.

The Bluetooth, iPod and USB are comparable to Toyota's - the iPod does not support iPhone OS 3 perfectly - but from what i've read - neither does Toyota.

I think from a cost standpoint, most aren't that much cheaper than a name brand - but they are more feature rich...

 

That is pretty much the latest standard stuff from China - looks almost identical with the exception of PIP (not that useful).

They have lots of good feedback - which is a good thing...

My device was shipped back from China, and should be here in a day or two - i'd wait and see (my fingers are crossed).
