Something jumped up and broke our windshield on the freeway Sunday evening.
    comparison shopping
-Toyota Dealer quote (Huntington Beach) = $1164.72 (not installed)
-Safelite auto glass (biggest Co. in the States = $320 (installed)

    Incredible!

(my deductible is $1000 so this is out of pocket)

    yes...but for 3x's the price (4x's when it's all installed)....cheese and rice!
I'll take my chances and live dangerously with the safelite non OEM.

I had the windshield changed on my 2006 with an aftermarket one. Total cost installed: $160 with tax. I have no problems with the glass. The installers could have been a little neater, but for that price, I have no complaints. I could have paid $50 more at Hunts Pont Glass, they have changed several windows for me over the years, and I had not issues at all with them.

I have 126,000 on my original windshield - plenty of pits from rocks and stuff but not cracks or divets. Stock Toyota glass seems fine to me.

Well, can't yourself among the fortunate few. When I polled owners on this site, half of those who reported any chips/pits also got a crack and nearly all of those had to be replaced. This is completely out of line with the many other vehicles I've had. In fact I've never had a window crack this way before despite many rock chips...including some larger ones on the glass margins of my Tundra.

Your deductible is $1000, but did you contact your insurer and ask if you have glass breakage coverage? I have a separate deductible for that of only $100.

Yes, I did contact Geico and they told me they would have fixed it free of charge if the damaged area was less then the size of a dollar bill. Unfortunately, the damaged area was larger and I'm assuming the "fix" would have been a "patch" job and not a whole new windshield (didn't ask).

Here in NY, if you have a crack that is under the windshield washer blade travel, more then 3/4" (?) long, you must replace the windshield.
