Lifetime Mileage Report by Japanese Hypermiler

    Hello all,

    I would like to report a Japanese most popular hypermiler, 108@Nagoya aka "Shogun", just finished to refill his 108th tank on his 2004 Prius.
    The result is 35.66 km/L (83.89 mpg) lifetime mileage on the 181,855.5 km (113,023.9 miles) odometer.

    Wow! Excellent work. Thanks for the report, too.

    Is it fair to say he drives mostly slower speed routes?

    Do these results come with mostly steady state cruising, or more P&G?

    Congratulations! He's a real Shogun of the hypermilers :). On the other hand, if he uses a plug-in (as was mentioned in his video profile), it puts his results into a perspective. MPG is totally unsuitable metrics for plug-in hybrids, because the car is taking additional energy from somewhere else.

    His basic technique is P&G and the speed limit on his commute is 50km/h (31mph) or 60km/h (37mph).

    His plug-in is for the engine block heater. :(
    Anyway, you're correct his Prius receives the external energy.

    wow!! His lifetime average is the Japanese 1-15 cycle's mileage estimate!!! It's 35.5km/L for the Gen 2 (nearly 80mpg)

    Occasionally someone will start posting arguing that brisk acceleration is the wrong way and that a slow acceleration is better for mileage. I certainly hope that we can all learn from the super-hypermiler who practices exclusive brisk-acceleration.
    And I'm, in no way, claiming to be perfect. I often have to remind myself to pursue brisk acceleration.

    Interesting thing is his mileage improved year by year.
    This year, his average FE is now 39.94km/L (94 mpg: 2.5L/100km). :cheer2:

    I believe the HV battery is still strong after 113k miles.

    Could it be that the tyres are wearing in? I know my mileage improved yearly until I got my 3.9L/100km tank in the summer of 2007.

    It's really hard to do 60-40 where I am now because this city is a LOT more spread out and have higher speed limits (60km/h and 70km/h limits on city streets). Hopefully I can go home soon and try to get a 3.7L/100km tank.


    That's good to hear. P&G doesn't have any negative effect on the HV battery. 113k miles.. that's 190,000km?
