I just got my 2010 prius 3 and am having trouble getting it in gear. Having my foot on the brake and then moving the shifter to "R" I get a message that says "shift in to P first." After moving the shifter around and restarting it, I finally got it to work, but I don't know how. This same thing played out both times I wanted to go somewhere.

    Please help.

I get that when my door is open and try to go. If it persists, take it in.

Open and close all doors including the hatch. I've noticed the car seems to take personal offense when the hatch is open.

my 04 car doesn't complain if any doors are open on my car... unless it's the Drivers door.. then it will ask me to shift to P.. since with the drivers door open it won't regen.

(so those run away Prii should just open the drivers door to drain the system asap...)

That just doesn't sound right. If it keeps doing it, take it to the dealer and show someone. Don't just explain it, show them.

I've gotten that message sometimes when shifting before the car is fully on. You just need to poke the power button again (with brake depressed). I assume I either didn't have the brake depressed quite enough, or that it's possible to shift too soon after poking the power button. Like you, I've sometimes thought that I had done everything right, and still had it happen. However, the common denominator is always trying to move too fast.

Press the brake peddle more strongly.
