Evan, thanks for itemizing. Perhaps I am wrong, but I think my local dealer would have charged a *lot* more. Would you mind posting the scan ? I think it will be helpful to a lot of people as a baseline of somewhat reasonable charges, sparks excluded.

btw, you posted $17 tax. 2% in MO ?

I think the tax is only on the parts ($255) for 6.7%...I thought it was actually closer to 8-9% though.

I probably won't post the actual scan, it would be a PITA as it's 6 pages, each has personal information I'd have to blur, and I think you can figure out everything from what I posted. Hourly rate is $85, so labor time for each item can be extrapolated from that based on the labor charge for each item.

IIRC, most of these items are not actual work time, but are based upon a book rate determined by Toyota.
IOW, the 'book rate' for changing spark plugs is 1 hour. The mechanic gets/charges $85 whether he completes the job in 30 minutes or if it takes him 2 hours b/c the plug was seized or something. So I wouldn't expect the cost to vary very much.

Very curious, my place charged 1.5 hours ($112.50) for the inverter fluid change but 1/2 hour for the trans fluid and the fluid was only $8.25 with a note: "Syn. trans fluid extra". That made my ATF change ~ $43 total. Kinda looks like my inverter change was on the WAY high side.

After reading Galaxee's lovely thread "What services you need ..." (thank goodness I had read about half the current pages when that was all there were!) and this one, I took my '04 in yesterday at 98,500 miles for the preemptive:

    1. Transmission fluid change
    2. Engine coolant change
    3. Inverter coolant change
    4. Throttle plate inspection (since it seems it can get gunked up)
Note: These are NOT in the service schedule, if I hadn't seen the write-ups here, I would not have known to do it. And since my dealer is (in)famous for tacking on, I wouldn't have trusted them "at the window" anyway. Of course since they can't seem to do a simple oil change to my requirements ("put in 3.5 quarts from these 4 bottles and give me half a bottle back" or "put in these 3.5 quarts and give me an empty back for the next time"), I do my own oil changes and they never see the car for regular service intervals so they don't get the chance to shaft me anyway.

The service rep said "flush inverter coolant". I said "no, it can damage the pump". He says they have done it before, I said "No, just drain and fill". He said "No problem, it is your car and we'll do whatever you ask". Estimate for all the work was $250. I would say that bigbearballs's dealer is charging a lot for just the engine and inverter coolant change. The labor cost is $75/hour at my dealer, maybe his charges a lot more per hour???

I thought about having them do the PCV "just because" but since there aren't any signs of problems, I think I'll just bite the "take everything apart to get at the cheap part" bullet myself in the summer, too dang cold right now! Thanks to Galaxee's hubby for the great pictures!!. Now I see that Dr. Fusco was only charged ~15 minutes labor to do this. Seems pretty darned fast given how much stuff has to be taken apart to get to the valve. My place charges that much time to replace the cabin air filter which only takes 2 minutes tops. Maybe a case where the 'usual' time is in our favor? I'll have to ask what they charge at my dealer. I'd go for $18 in labor to save all the time to do it myself :)

They called to say the water pump was starting to leak so I had them replace it since they had one in the parts dept and who wants to go back??? All in, it was $514.22 of which:

    • $334.93 for labor
    • $167.56 for parts (the pump was $97.88, $53.29 for the coolant and $8.25 for the trans fluid. I guess the extra $8.14 is for the water pump gasket)
    • $11.73 for tax
The throttle plate was clean so I guess whatever conditions I drive in don't gunk up the plate.
