Walmart SuperTech Oil change...

    Just did my second oil change on my 2007 prius and i used Walmart's SuperTech synthetic oil and filter again. I also use it on my 2001 dodge durango.

    i couldnt be happier...my prius runs smooth as so does my durango.

    cost was $16...

    I highly recommend SuperTech oil and filters....

    Did you buy the 2007 Prius new? I'm just asking because you wrote that you just did your second oil change. Do you mean that this is the second oil change that you personally did and a mechanic did the others?
    I'm not trying to bust chops here, just want to be clear.

    Do you have any hard data on the oil? Do you know who actually manufactures it? Is it a Chinese product to make it so cheap, or just a relabeled Mobil 1 synth?

    Have you had UOAs done on your Durango or Prius to know how well the oil is actually holding up? No offense, but your car running smoothly after 2 oil changes is irrelevant, what I want to know is how well it will protect the ICE 100k or 200k miles from now. Saving $4 now may not be worth it in 4 or 5 years if it's an inferior product.

    I'm not suggesting that it is inferior, just would like to hear/see something objective to prove that it's just as good as name brand products on the market.

    I am a bit leery of many things sold at deep discount stores like Walmart. Do synthetics all meet an acceptable minimum standard or are we getting what we pay when compared to Amsoil, Mobil 1 etc?
    Please don't tell me the oil is imported from China...

    haha...my bad, let me explain...i bought my 2007 used, just this june 2009 with only 4500 miles on it.... it was a corporate lease and it didn't get used much by the previous owners...

    so it has had only one oil change by a mechaninc and then i have done two personally...

    sorry, i dont have any data that you mentioned.... ive only read other forum posts where people have said it has worked for them. ive also seen a few posts that have shown that the filters were made better than fram.

    I started using it on my durango about 3 years ago and it worked out. so i began using it on my prius too... the bottle claims to have sludge protection and other goodies like that, so i feel safe.

    it seems to me that there is always someone who hates even the best brands of oil....to each his own.....

    if you feel like saving a few bucks, then i recommend supertech again...

    i think it depends on what part of the country you live in. some parts warren makes the oil other its mobil. as far as the filters go i think they are made by the company that makes puralator filters. go to www.bobistheoilguy.com for more info

    It should have WPP on the jug bottom, if so, it is made by Warren Performance Products (or Packaging), made in USA. They are good oils. Lately there have been great rebates on other synthetic oils bringing the price to almost nothing.

    Supertech filters have been made up till now by Champion Labs, which is in the USA and makes filters for Mobil 1, AC, K&N and many others. In Prius form, the filter is a good one for the price.

    I see USA made stuff at Walmart, as much or more than other big chains. I bought a rolling pin, made USA, everyone else including Sears was China, and the price wasn't any higher for the USA made either.

    It is easy to find out if a oil meets the minimum required specs. This is done by checking the API service grade on the back of the bottle, and check for the API certification starburst on the front. Supertech oil is a SM oil with the starburst symbol, so it at least meets API's minimum standards. Beyond that, you have no idea whether any oil is better than another without extensive used oil testing. I would buy the Supertech over Mobil 1 because it meets all the same specs at a reduced cost. And no, the oil is not imported from China. But even if it was, who cares? Aren't our cars imported from Japan?

    I buy best quality synthetic oil and change it twice yearly at about a 10k mile interval, rather than no-name oil I would feel obliged to change every 3k miles. Cheaper, better for the environment, and less hassle for me.

    And people don't seem to care that much when they pump gasoline made from imported oil into their cars. :confused: Go figure. ;)
