Kind of hard for Troy's warranties to be bogus, since he is selling Toyota Extended Warranties, backed by Toyota Motor Corporation.

Just compare Troy's prices to others.

For example, Troy sells the Toyota Extra Care Platinum Plan 7 years/100,000 miles/$0 deductible extended warranty for $1055 (it retails for $1850, and my dealership offered to sell it to me for $2400).

Troy also sells all the other Toyota extended warranties. Just ask him for price quotes.

Troy Dietrich = WarrantyShack.com = Toyota of Greenfield, MA.

They are a Toyota dealership and sell genuine Toyota extended warranties and prepaid maintenance contracts.

You can trust or not trust whomever you want.

But personally, after reading the initial post and other posts of Danny (the founder of this forum), the posts of Troy who posts here under the user name TOG (stands for Toyota Of Greenfield, MA), and many of the 1000+ other posts here (many by longtime PriusChatters), I have no problem whatsoever trusting Troy.

These are genuine Toyota insurance products underwritten by an insurance company that is ultimately 100% owned by Toyota Motor Corporation.

Toyota extended warranties must be honored by all Toyota dealerships.

(But as to Toyota prepaid maintenance contracts, you'll have to ask your individual Toyota dealership whether he participates in and honors them.)

This thread is very long and it would be hard to read everything. Somehow you managed to miss all the MANY posts that directly answer your questions. The warranties bought through Troy are Toyota Corp warranties. I got one. You receive the paperwork in the mail after you buy the warranty, the paper work comes not from Troy or from Toyota of Greenfield but from the Toyota Corporation. Troy is the contact for buying the warranty at a discounted price for Prius Chat members. You don't have to trust Troy. It's a question of whether you trust Toyota, because it's their warranty he is selling, as a representative of one of the Toyota dealerships, like any other representative of any other Toyota dealership.

OK. So I guess I was really skimming through the forum. Thanks for all the information. The prices seem very reasonable and I expect to be contacted by Troy tomorrow. I think I'm in for the 7 year/100000 mile platinum plan for $1055 and the synthetic oil plan for 4 years/55000 mile prepaid maintenance for and additional $1075.

    Hi twmark,

    IMO:

    1. You might want to hold off on deciding whether to get an extended warranty until you approach 3 years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first) when the basic warranty will run out. By waiting, you'll be able to better assess (1) whether you think the car needs the extended warranty and (2) which warranty to get in terms of maximum years and miles to match your past and anticipated future driving miles (you can save hundreds off that $1055 price if you only need and choose a plan with fewer years or miles).

    2. The prepaid maintenance plan is not worth $1075. I think that you basically get 4 or 5 oil changes, plus tire rotations that may or may not be useful, and a few visual inspections. I can't see that stuff costing more than $500 or $600 if you did it a la carte.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is my first Prius. It seems like the maintenance on a hybrid is higher than for a conventional car. I don't know how valid it is but edmunds.com lists maintenance at $4417 for the first 5 years of ownership!! Sort of scary.

    "Maintenance" defined by edmunds as:

    "Maintenance
This is the estimated expense of the two types of maintenance: scheduled and unscheduled. Scheduled maintenance is the performance of factory-recommended items at periodic mileage and/or calendar intervals. Unscheduled maintenance includes wheel alignment and the replacement of items such as the battery, brakes, headlamps, hoses, exhaust system parts, taillight/turn signal bulbs, tires and wiper blades/inserts. Estimated tire replacement costs are supplied to Edmunds.com by The Tire Rack, Inc."

I haven't looked at the edmunds breakdown for the 2010 Prius. But its $4417 estimate is for both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, while the prepaid maintenance plan is only for scheduled maintenance. You'll have to assess for yourself whether the cost of performing scheduled maintenance is less or greater than the $1075 cost of the prepaid maintenance plan (I think it's a lot less).

Similar to twmark, I just got my first prius.
If this is a premium plan, then it would include 15k and 30k major maintenance. Wouldn't those cost more?

Actually, I don't know for sure because I don't have a Gen III. I based my calculations on the Gen II scheduled maintenance and what I know of the Gen III's (synthetic oil change every 10,000 miles). If the Gen III schedule is like the Gen II's, then we're talking about at most 5 synthetic oil changes at $70 each ($350 total), tire rotations (which in my opinion you don't need ... there are conflicting schools of thought on this), and visual inspections. I just don't see those costs adding up to the $1075 cost of the prepaid maintenance plan.

FWIW, it seems to be the overwhelming opinion on this board that the prepaid maintenance plan is not worth it, even at the discounted price offered by Troy/WarrantyShack.com.

In any event, if you have the Gen III maintenance schedule I suggest you cost out the items yourself.

I just purchased a 2010 Prius and was sold a Platinum Extended Warranty for $1995 at 8 years 75,000k. Others have mentioned in this forum thread a Platinum 7 year 100k plan. Are there different terms within the Platinum level?

Yes, there are 18 different maximum years/miles combinations of the Platinum Plan for the Prius that you can get, plus you can choose a $50 or $-0- deductible for each combination.

Check out this chart and retail prices (also click on the tabs to see other info like the different benefits) for the different extended warranties:

    Toyota Financial Services

Note that at $1995 you paid WAY TOO MUCH for your warranty -- it retails for $1575 for the $50 deductible and $1625 for the $-0- deductible, and my guess is that Troy/WarrantyShack.com/Toyota of Greenfield, MA sells it for around $900 (because the 7 years/100,000 miles/$-0- deductible policy retails for $1850 and they sell it for $1055).

I strongly suggest that you cancel your extended warranty immediately. If you cancel within 30 days of your putting the car on the road, then you will get a full refund; after 30 days your refund will be pro-rated.

Then I suggest that you hold off on deciding whether to get an extended warranty until you approach 3 years or 36,000 miles (whichever comes first) when the basic warranty will run out.

And finally, if you decide to get an extended warranty, then get it from Troy/WarrantyShack.com/Toyota of Greenfield, MA because they have the best prices and buying from them helps to support this great forum.

[EDIT: As mbarrows posted below, you might be able to get even lower prices than WarrantyShack's (though I think it's very uncommon).]

Got the seven year/100,000 mile $0 deductible Platinum Extended Warranty when I purchased our 2010 Prius last week for $925.00 from the dealer (Planet Toyota, Matteson, IL). When he offered me that price, I knew it was better than I could get here going through Troy.

Thanks. $925 is a great price indeed! (Exactly 50% off the $1850 MSRP.) I wonder if $925 is the dealer's cost for that policy.

Great price. Did they offer that price up front or did you negotiate the deal?

I always wonder if we're comparing apples to apples when I see a post like this. Troy offers the genuine Toyota warranty, which is backed by Toyota and honored by all dealers.

Did mbarrows buy the Toyota warranty or one from a third party? Were there any other extenuating circumstances involved that would have induced the dealer to offer that price?

Seems too good to be true.

Apples to apples aapoppa; it's Toyota's Extended Warranty (backed by Toyota and honored at ALL dealers!) and NOT a third party warranty. I know this is a great price and the guy that sold it to me said they were giving me a "bleeding edge" discount on this. When I saw his price, I knew it was better than I could get here and snapped it up.

My deal on the car was not as good as some of the others I've seen posted here so I was glad I at least did well on this.

If you'd like, I could scan the Platinum warranty from Toyota but believe it; I purchased the $0 deductible Platinum Extended Warranty (7 years/100,000 miles) for $925.00!!

PS - I traded my 2005 Prius too but it only had about 70,000 miles on it.

I negotiated the deal and also told them that I knew the price they charged for the 2010 was not as good as some I had seen so I wanted a good deal on this. I think dealers have a pretty wide latitude as far as what they charge and what they can make on these extended warranties.

Could be their cost because his remark was that I was getting a "bleeding edge" discount.

I believe you :rockon:and I would agree that you got a great price! Best I've ever seen on PC.

Were you sorry to see your '05 go? Was it one of the ones, like mine, that were useless in the snow or did it do as well as others on PC state theirs do? I find the Gen III is great on snow and ice!

We really didn't have to trade but we wanted the G3 Prius. I only got stuck once in the snow with it (2005) but my wife is the daily driver so I didn't drive it everyday; she never complained about this though.

As far as the 2010, we've only had it 5 days now so I don't know how it will do in snow; we're supposed to get a big winter storm tonight so maybe she'll put the car through it's paces tomorrow.

Love all the technology on it (AT pkg.) but am somewhat concerned over all the braking issue stories; there are too many not to believe that something isn't right. We'll see on that too. Was on the NHTSB site today and there were over 30 complaints on this issue.

Bottom line is that I hope I'm not sorry we traded (Ford Fusion was just rated the "best" hybrid in the US). Toyota has had a lot of "black eyes" recently with their quality control and recalls.
