Although I like the entire press release, this is my favorite part: "with an aim to begin sales in the tens of thousands of units to the general public in two years."

This is EXCELLENT news for Japanese citizens! :)

Addressing additional markets also, I wonder what the average distances driven by American drivers, by European drivers, by Australian drivers are.
Perhaps our friends at Toyota USA have such data available.

It's Goodyear GT3 summer tires used on the JP Gen2 since its launch, also used on the JP Gen3 "L" model.
No one, among JP users, can find any better LRR tires than the GT3 yet.

The load-index is 88 and the number is better than 215/45R17 (87) Turing model tires.

ken, are you couting base equipment weight or equipment similar to plugin model? In Europe, difference between "base" and top versions is 50kg, and european base versions are well equipped, with even HUD being standard.

Yes. The PHV is based on the S model in Japan.
However, we found the PHV wears thinner tires (185/65R15) than the base model's (195/65R15).

so that is probably the best indication of what kind of weight gain we get with PHEV... so 40 mile Phev would have around 400kg more weight? ;-). Quite interesting, at some point, there would be need for bigger engine.

I think 20km is not only based on Japanese driving pattern, but European as well... Europeans who live in big cities probably travel up to 20km during the day as well.

Let me compare it to my pricing here in Eastern Europe
    1l = 0.982 Eur
    1 KWh = 0,1494 Eur - day
    1 KWh = 0,0747 Eur - night

    Gasoline-only mode: 30.6 km/L = 0,0321 Euro per KM
    Electric-only mode: 6.57 km/kWh = 0,0117 Euro per KM - night
    Electric-only mode: 6.57 km/kWh = 0,0227 Euro per KM - day

Hopefully other people can post their prices around Europe and World, as we pay differently, so this will make sense (or not) depending on the market.

Ken, what is the price difference between S model and PHEV in Japan

I already reported about the pricing (before tax).
    base model: 2.36 Myen
    2010 PHV: 5 Myen
However, please note the 2010 PHV pricing is not for consumers of the mass-production model.
The consumer version PHV price is expected to be 3 Myen.

Anyway, the electric bill calculation in Japan is shown on page-10 of the presentation shown the top of this thread.

Thanks spwolf. Here in the UK:

Gasoline (£5 per UK gallon): 6.9 pence per mile
Electric (day 20 p/kWh): 4.9 pence per mile
Electric (night 6 p/kWh): 1.5 pence per mile

In American money that would be....

    Gasoline: 11.2 cents per mile
Electric (day): 7.9 cents per mile
Electric (night): 2.4 cents per mile

This is what many of us have been waiting for...well, besides the flying cars I imagined as a kid. Intresting thing however; the range of existing Plug In Hybrid systems by Plug In Supply, Inc. give your 04-09 Prius an electric only option of 50 miles at speeds up to 52 mph, blended mode for 100+ mpg up to 100 miles at HWY speeds or regular Prius hybrid mode once the 100 miles has past. This is available right now, not at a future date to be pushed further back. You can keep your existing Prius (saving carbon, etc.) and convert to the most powerful system for under $12,000. Very cool.

Have any members here converted to a plug in Hybrid? I would love to read their experience and results.

It's a tad amusing to hear some people hot to get hands on a plug-in hybrid. When they announce sales pricing in a couple years, more than a few people are going to be like ... 'oh, nevermind, out of my price range.'

That never stopped me from drooling over the McLaren and Lamborghini posters when I was a kid. Unlike those cars, however, I would spend more than I would otherwise to get a plug-in purely on the desire to promote the technology. Kind of like I did in 2004.

Plugin will be a feature, not a requirement. It will be a feature that can boost horsepower, MPG and it CAN also pay back -- unlike leather, V6 or V8, Navi, etc.. options.

Yes! It's what I do now. We convert any 04-09 Prius to be a pure electric car for up to 50 miles with speeds up to 52mph. Just like combustion engines, driving style, hills, etc...effect the range but at 35mph, stop and go traffic, the 50 miles is doable. The blended mode provides 100+ mpg for 100 miles before the battery pack is drained and you must flip to regular Prius mode. Our range is far better than the upcoming Toyota Plug-in...makes you wonder right? We convert anything to be pure electric but it's spendy...the 10kw system turnes an exiting 04-09 into a "poor mans" electric car as stated. look up Plug In Solutions. Built right here in San Juan Capistrano, CA!
