No mud flaps on the 2010? Not even as an accessory ???

This has long been my cardinal rule in that every car I buy must have mud flaps. It protects the painted finish and that to me is always more important than the slight aerodynamic upset it may cause.

Then imagine my surprise, as I was pricing a new 2010 Prius and no flaps were available. Even my dealer was a bit surprised on this one.

Of course, all this is happening in Canada and as many of you may be aware, the Prius-III was just released this week into our market.

Anyhow, has anyone in the US been able to secure a set? Last time I checked they were not available as accessories, but I still need to make sure this is the case.

I do not see them in the U.S. accessory list in the ebrochure, and cannot recall any mention of them in any other Toyota literature. So I've been looking for some generic and small aftermarket splash guards. Like the ones I bought for a previous car, never installed, and discarded a year ago. :-(

Toyota Netherlands: mud flaps front €59, mud flaps rear €59.

    Hi RoyalBlue;

€59 for a pair is definitely not cheap and better be made of premium rubber (no brittle behavior in the winter)... but I will consider ordering it from outside North America if my searches lead to a dead end.

Come to think of it, I had exactly the same problem with the Gen II Prius, and I am still puzzled as to why Toyota in NA does not think this to be a worthwhile accessory to have available.

Just wait a year, it'll be there. Same thing happened on the 2002 Camry. For 2003, it became standard and accessory mudguards were available (and we added it on).

Actually the €59 is the accessory price with a new car, so it is incl. mounting them on the car.

Old habits die hard, eh? That isn't necessary anymore.

The shape of the car prevents direct impact. Haven't you noticed how dramatically different the shape of the 2010 Prius is compared to cars of the past? That rounded lower edge is totally gone, replaced with a perpendicular corner. Spray while you drive straight is already eliminated, without flaps.

Also, the paint itself far more resistant than in the past.

Remember, I live in the land of glacial sand deposits... which we use generously on our roads here throughout the winter. Yet, there is no evidence of the protective need for flaps.

For cosmetics, that's a different matter. The splash of salt from the wheels when turning can be deflected by flaps if they stick out far enough.

Try checking with Deland Toyota in Fl. they have an EBAY store. I got mud flaps for my Prius when my dealer couldn't get them. Seems like the southeast zone is more on the ball with this stuff. I still can't figure out why one zone would have them and another zone can't?

Indeed. Old habits die hard. ;)

But I will kindly disagree on the need for it. I am a bit further north from you and as many will suspect, the winter abuse is not lessened by a safe enough amount regardless of rocker and quarter panel design. I should know first hand since these very design attributes are already very familiar to me.

Still, upon close examination the rear bumper will get hit along with the front rocker panel, and the front lower door just behind the front wheels. It is a bit more dramatic in the rear though, but the front wheels will clearly do their part when turning.

Nope. This car will not spend a single winter kicking the sand+salt even if I am left with no other option but to order the proper flaps from abroad.

One thing I forgot to check with the current production model at the dealer:
The chipGard 3M see-thru film on on the rocker panel, just behind the rear passenger door. I did not see it on the display models at the PDC.

That part will surely get chipped and pitted by the "winter time" sand and salt very quickly and I will likely have to secure two patches just in case they are missing.

Did anyone find a good source for molded mud guards or flaps yet, I did a search and came up with nothing so far?
    Thanks

I have read through a long Blog on the lack of US/Canadian Prius owners to purchase mudflaps for 2010 other than from Europe. Is that still the situation? if so, can someone repost the site for purchasing the mud flaps? The earlier ebay links did not appear to be active any longer. Thanks so much

Weathertech makes no-drill exact-fit mud flaps for many cars, but not (yet) for the 2010 Prius. You can do what some of us have already done: On Weathertech's front page you can Shop by Product, select Mud Flaps, and enter Toyota,2010,Prius on the next page, and the next page will tell you they don't have it.

Click on the Product Request Form and ask them to make flaps for the 2010 Prius. Point out that the dealer does not offer them in the US, and individual imports are very expensive. Maybe that will help.

I recall that Danny has tried to find a source for mud flaps at a reasonable price, and was unable to do so. Otherwise we could get them at the PC Shop.

Most car manufactures have mud flaps at release date or shortly after.

Toyota UK readily provides mudflaps as an available accessory. Cost plus fitting is of the order of GBP80. I am having them fitted to my vehicle although I recognise that they may adversely affect mpg.

Hi All, just bought my Prius last Sunday and I am also looking for mud flaps. The salesman was going to sell me mudflaps for $895 and I said no. Then Monday I decided to see if I could still get them and the parts department told me they had no such thing. Always had them on all my cars. Anyone find them anywhere? Thanks

    Hi-
Here's the link to the original discussion on mudflaps for the 2010 Prius -
    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...modifications/67338-2010-prius-mud-flaps.html

... and here is the current eBay link for Pentagon Sheffield who sells them in the UK. They are listed as 2009 mudflaps over in Europe, however they are considered as 2010 for the U.S.
TOYOTA PRIUS GENUINE FRONT AND REAR MUD FLAPS 2009> - eBay (item 250571649764 end time Feb-28-10 05:16:55 PST)

I hope this is helpful. I purchased a set myself from this vendor, but I didn't get a chance to install them before the winter came. Since I have no garage, I'll be putting them on once the weather gets better. This seller was a pleasure to deal with ... easy purchase and quick shipping. The install directions can be found in the above Prius Chat link _ though you will have to read through the discussion to find them.

Where did you get that? Danny had a thread asking who wanted mud flaps and updated it a couple of days ago to say he had paid for them and expected them soon. Here is a link: http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...ifications/67338-2010-prius-mud-flaps-26.html

I bought and installed a set from Sheffield Toyota in the UK. Great service and they work just fine. A bit pricey, but on the other hand, I have them on and it's winter here. No point in waiting over a few $$$ IMHO. I doubt that they will be much less expensive if purchased here as they have to be imported regardless.
