My wife and I had hoped to wait at least a couple more years before car shopping again -- maybe until the plug-in Prius became available -- but last week our older car got rear-ended and totaled. :(

So now we're probably looking for another Prius (or at least another Toyota). We've been pretty happy with the service department at Ron Tonkin, but aren't so sure about going back to their sales people... it was hard to talk them out of the MSRP+$2000 for our basic 2005 Prius five years ago, and it looks like they might want that kind of price again on the 2010. And Vancouver Toyota is part of the Dick Hannah empire, which we've been well warned against (I think there's some stories of how badly they mess up cars in the PriusChat archives).

Anyone in the Portland area have recommendations for / against dealers around here? Thanks.

Check Costco? When I was looking for my prius they had one dealer they worked with who actually had a prius in stock, you may get lucky? I went with royal Moore, only because they had a type 2 in stock, I’m not sure if i would recommend them.
Honestly i prefer working with Costco or internet sales. Also check some of the small towns near Portland they may have some in stock and you may be able to get a better deal. Auto trader may list those towns as will Edmonds.com
I paid invoice at royal moore.

I bught my Prius "at home" in Salem after first going to Wilsonville Toyota who has "only" prices. They were about $400 under MSRP at the time. Capitol Toyota in Salem met their price and gave me $100 more for my Subaru--which obtained some front fender damage after the Wilsonville quote. I liked Wilsonville's advertised "no bull" sales technique. Start by getting internet quotes.

    Hi Rickster,
I went to Vancouver Toyota to look at a Prius. They had just what we wanted in stock acording to the computer. When we got there they could not find the car. So we took a drive in another Prius. We desided we liked the car but wanted the color and options that we wanted. We did find the car we had seen on the internet but they said it was sold. They found something close at another dealer and cold get it for us. The deal was not good enough and the car was close but not fully what we wanted. Also I knew I had to walk out the door before they would give the best offer.

    So we walked.

I then went on the internet and found 4 of what I wanted in the Seattle area. I did internet shopping for a day and got good offers from Titus-Wills in Tacoma and from Renton. I finally also got a good offer from Vancouver Toyota, but still not on the color we wanted.

So I set an apointment in Tacoma and drove up. They sold the car I wanted while I was in the showroom but got me the same care from Kirkwood. I dickered a while on my trade value and finally got a good deal. It was a long day but they did a good job and took care of me.

I worked with Jim and Kay Love. I would recoment them if you want to drive that far.

    Thanks,
    Dan Lander

I bought from Jerry Rousselle in the fleet/internet dept. of Broadway Toyota. I got his name from "winebuff", another forum member.

I had an excellent experience. I ordered in advance because I was buying from out of state and needed to time my purchase so that my wife and I could drive my old car out to give to my daughter, go to her baby shower, and then drive my new Prius back to Colorado.

He put in a preference for and got exactly what I wanted. He communuicated well every step of the way. They made all of the dealer programmable changes I requested in advance and made the transaction and pick up quick and easy.

All dealers were selling the Prius at msrp (or more) at that time. There were absolutely no extra or b.s. charges.

Because my daughter lives in Vancouver, I tried to contact Vancouver Toyota by requesting a quote through their internet site. I didn't get a reply. They also didn't seem to update the inventory on their site regularly. Jerry was responsive from day one. I am happy to recommend him to you.

Well, we didn't get a Prius -- decided to save some money on the "workhorse" car so we can afford a PHV Prius or somesuch when the time comes to replace our '05 Prius. Got a 2010 Yaris instead.

But I can heartily endorse the Wilsonville Toyota recommendation! Not only are they a "one price" (no haggle) dealership, they're a "one person" place, too -- you don't get juggled from salesguy to sales manager to finance guy to closer or whatever, each of them trying to wring more cash out of you or pressure you into something they get more kickback out of. Our "customer advocate" knew his stuff well (and you could tell he was serious about that, too... he was studying up on Bluetooth stuff when we arrived one day), and was nothing but helpful.

Our guy -- Rob -- even showed us everything he was doing with the "Dealer Daily" system. Not sure if this a national thing... apparently it's how Toyota tracks inventory and shipments across all dealers in this region at least, and typically only sales managers have access to it. This is apparently standard practice at Wilsonville. (Thanks to it, we were able to tell how many of the other dealers we'd called looking for test drives were being either inattentive or just saying whatever they could to get us in the door... some claimed to have a 5-door stick-shift Yaris on the lot, but Toyota doesn't ship that to this region.)

Of note to any other prospective buyers in the area -- that "one price" tends to be a good discount off MSRP for all their vehicles. On the Prius it varies from $400ish on the lower packages to over $2000 on the higher ones.

Congratulations on your new Yaris and thanks for the dealer recommendation. :)
