    lol

That's the first time I've seen the rear. It looks quite good.

Wasn't there picture of a Hummer H2 vs. a school bus in the "considering a smart car" thread? That might be more impressionable.

Toyota is planning to bring it over. We already have the new 451 smart. The iQ should do better because it's a Toyota and will be priced a little lower (though not by much I think) and can at least seat 3 persons plus a child. I also assume we'll get the 1.33 litre engine, not the 1.0 litre engine so it'll be a tad more powerful.

jeez... you guys crack me up :D

If that is the best they can do I find it is sad. The Prius is a midsize that gets 50 mpg yet this thing is beyond tiny and can only manage 60 mpg? What up with that? I have to wonder if the reporting is in error or just speculation. Seems something that small should be closer to 100 mpg.

EPA 60 mpg is superb, if the car costs $15k and is reliable. It will be in a class of it's own.

Nice PS! Doesn't spoil the lines too much with the addition of extra doors!

well i hope it does 60 MPG at EPA... it means it is further optimized HSD system, as i dont see weight influencing mpg that much with EPA testing, especially with full hybrids. Car itself should not even be that much lighter, difference between Yaris and Corolla is 10-15% in weight.

$15k and 60 MPG? Those are a bit unbelievable numbers :cheer2:

as these things go usually, i even doubt we will get mpg and price info, car is year away, at least ;-). Personally I expect 17-18k price and 55 MPG. I cant see anything else really possible.

This new Scion iQ, according to the web page, gets 60 mpg. The Prius officially gets around 50 mpg. It seems I have to give up a lot of room to get an extra 10 mpg.

    It is very cute.

So the January 8 2010 story is new but the pics are not so new? That's a shame, but the good news is 5 hours to go and we'll get even fresher images.

You cannot directly compare engine sizes between an Otto-cycle and an Atkinson-cycle engine. The Atkinson cycle, with its very late intake valve closing, effectively reduces capacity significantly. That's why peak power for the Prius 1.8L engine is only around 98 horsepower, compared to 132 hp for the same engine block in an Otto configuration (e.g. Corolla, Matrix). The original Prius engine (used from the first cars in 1997 right up to 2009) had 76 hp compared to the Otto variant at 110 hp.

The car has to be able to accelerate somewhat on steep grades, at highway speeds, which requires a lot more power than cruising on the flat. There's a limit to how far you can downsize.

The 1.0L Otto-cycle iQ currently has 67 hp and the 1.33L produces 97 hp. Top speed is 93mph (105 for 1.33L) and 0-62mph in 14.7 seconds (13.1 for 1.33L). An 80 hp 1.5L Atkinson-cycle with a reasonable hybrid system might outdo the 1.33L for performance while beating the 1.0 on economy and emissions.

so i would guess that chance of getting any kind of numbers is close to zero ;-)
