I've read through many of the threads out there and have a good understanding of what's involved with the aftermarket install. I'm left with some questions about which unit may work best with the III utilizing the existing:
    1. XM SAT antenna
    2. Steering wheel controls (including BT)
    3. Built-in microphone
    4. Use of all speakers

Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket HU which will incorporate the use of *ALL* these existing components? Also, I'm probably going to wait for the Metra surround, but i'm curious - will this surround need the additional brackets to "fill" the voids on either side of the faceplate (like the European surround) or will it be made custom for a standard 2-din NAV unit?

I am considering the AVIC Z110BT but am definitely up for suggestions.

I don't know about the Metra but with the scorcse kit, it would fit a standard to 2 din without need for the fillers. I suspect the Metra kit will be the same.

Also, is the XM receiver inside the stock Toyota HU (on a Prius III w/no NAV) or is it an external component? If it is external, where is it and can it be hooked up to an aftermarket HU - or do I have to get an additional XM receiver? Any help would be appreciated.

I think I saw somewhere here on PC that the XM is external and is under the driver's seat...

I visited a local Best Buy installer and they told me that the stock XM receiver (wherever it is) is not compatible with any other aftermarket HU (proprietary). I don't know how reliable this is but it sounds typical.
