Hybrids could be built in Canada: Toyota

    TORONTO - There's no reason why Toyota wouldn't one day manufacture hybrids in Canada, especially if its new products prove to be as popular as the Prius, a senior Toyota Canada executive says.

    "We've said for a long time now we want to move hybrids across our lineup, so there's absolutely no reasons why hybrids could not be built in Canada," managing director Stephen Beatty said in a telephone interview from the North American International Auto Show in Detroit

    "The issue is, when do we get to that critical mass in the market that makes production feasible?" he added.

    Would the cost of a Prius (or other hybrid) come down in Canada if it were built in Canada? It seems that your (Canadian) fuel prices should make hybrids popular, but you now have to pay more than US buyers. How much is tariff and how much is marketing?

    Not necessarily. For example, we pay $1,295 Freight/PDI for a Corolla that's built in Cambridge, ON yet you guys pay $695 Freight to have it shipped as far away as California. Yup. 90-$1.10/litre depending on province/territory.

    6.1% is the tariff for any vehicle imported into Canada that is not built in Canada, US or Mexico.


    The Prius was cold tested in Timmins, ON. You figured they'll include heated cloth seats.

    Maybe this is in regards to the Lexus RX? Every 400h and 450h RX has been built in Japan. Only RX 330s and now RX 350s have been build in the plant in Canada.

    Maybe. But the Cambridge plant may be running at full capacity with the closure of NUMMI.

    You think maybe that will help keep the prices down? I am happy with the way TCI has handled the currency exchange so far (I know it's hard esp. talking with Toyota Japan cause eventually profit goes their way so they need to keep a balance of the income from all countries) but I have noticed that TCI have been increasing prices dramatically. I don't mean the $100 or so from year-to-year.

    If you've noticed, the base prices haven't moved much but the packages have increased. I just updated my Venza price sheet and some packages increased as much as $1k with no added content!
